Hello from Newbie and his Jupe!

Post by Space54 »

Inspired by seeing Pauline and Keith Winteringham's Jupiter at last year's Bradford to Morecambe car run, Pauline and Keith Spacey's quest for a jupe has recently come to a successful end! Saw 5 or 6 altogether including a Meade bodied one, but as soon as my wife set eyes on the one below her mind (and therefore mine by proxy) was made up!

Just a couple of questions (no doubt the first of many) if I may:-

1) Can anyone recommend a clip on type rear view door mirror? Although I have already ordered some that require permanent fixing I am most hesitant about drilling my new P&J!

2) Any suggestions on a 50's looking but modern functioning radio? Where are the "preferred" places to site an aerial?

Many thanks in anticipation of your helpful replies!

Hi Keith, and welcome :)

Congratulations on your Jupe, I think it was linked from the forum and we all cooed over it as it looks like a gorgeous car. Will you be joining us at the Daventry rally? If you don't have details, have a look here: http://jowett.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1657

Do you mean wing mirrors? If so - don't bother, just run with the hood down :D

I don't actually recall seeing many people with clip on mirrors, but I'm sure someone will be along with suggestions. I have an SC and I don't have any wing mirrors - mind you, I also don't yet (quite!) have a hood, but that's another story - and I have decided not to fit them to the car as I think it spoils the lines of the Jupe. Plus I'm not sure I could quite bear to make holes in the bodywork that we took such a long time doing...

On the radio front, these people are apparently pretty good at taking a vintage radio and giving them modern innards: http://vintagewirelesslondon.co.uk/ As for where to site it, I guess the glove box. I know the SCs had a radio as an optional extra, and mine has a hole cut out of the dashboard on the passenger side - you can see the siting of it at the bottom of this page: http://www.jowettjupiter.co.uk/specs.htm but someone more knowledgable than me will no doubt be along soon to tell you about where they went on a SA :) Thinking about it, I can't remember if I had an aerial - or indeed a hole for one! - when we were doing the car up. Hmm.

Any other questions, do please just ask and we'll do our best to help and not confuse you!
Amy.

(As an aside, is there some rule in the JCC about having to be called Keith in order to be a member? We do seem to have a lot of them..!

Welcome to the club!

You don't see many in that colour. I like it, especially the blue hood, I can't think of ever seeing one with a blue hood, and variety is the spice of life!

To try and help on the mirror thing - if you mean wing mirrors, I'd suggest you get some which you can attach to the quarterlights with a sucker - they stick on solid but can be removed if you are planning long journeys. That said, they seem to be a bit surplus to requirements on a Jupiter - the field of vision isn't bad at all from the drivers seat. I wouldn't suggest drilling through the wings or doors to fit them - it is a hole that may be a real pain to remove if you change your mind.

If you mean a clip on rear view mirror for the centre of the car, you may well have a tab in the centre of the windscreen to attach one - it comes backward from the centre of the screen on the ones we've got, but yours may be different. Personally I think the vintage ones where a mirror is clipped in are neat and look good, the black plastic ones are ok but not exactly vintage.

If you don't have a tab at all in the centre of the screen you have two options, either a sucker mirror like this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VINTAGE-CAR-REAR- ... 3802124816 or removing the panels from the inside top of the screen (should be screwed in, normally covered in leather) and then fitting a normal type mirror to the wood behind, or through the covers into the wood.

There seem to be loads of mirrors at autojumbles, but ebay is a reliable source of parts like this. They seem to be more expensive than rummaging through the stalls, but then it is convenient.

For a radio, there's not many that look right and do what modern radios do, CD players, mp3 player hookups etc, I found this one which is a lot more 80s than 50s, but is better than a big black plastic box in there! http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/4100161 ... d-mmc.html - I'd suggest either fitting one inside the glovebox and having a remote control for it, or getting an original (or at least 50s) radio and getting it rewired professionally, however this is expensive.

If you get along to Daventry for the rally you will see every conceivable approach to solving these problems, decide what you want to do, and then ask the owners and do the same. Plus you will get to meet a huge number of members all at once, and this year is going to be a good one with all the GP100 stuff going on.

Hi Keith,
Your Jupiter looks to be a lovely car - I must confess I do not remember seeing 705YUE before, so I would be very interested to know what its chassis number is. Somebody has made a good job with this car as the bodywork and paintwork looks excellent - I wish mine looked like that!
Good luck with the car and welcome to the Club.
Very best wishes,
Noel Stokoe

Jack and Amy have not really needed wing mirrors on the SC because they stole my wide angle interior mirror that was on my SA! But you certainly need them, particularly for motorway driving where motorbikes may well be undercuting or overtaking and you need to change lanes. Turning your head to look behind is not advisable at 70mph. On a standard Jup the miniscule rear window and no side windows in the hood make rear vision very restricted.

On my SA I have wing mirrors on both sides and also have a mirror mounted above the trafficator slot on the driver's side. I prefer this mirror as it suffers less from shake. The wing mirrors help to maintain that all round perception as they are in the line of sight of normal driving.

OK, I borrowed the SC windscreen for many years to fit glass onto the SA for rallying......
