Bernard G and I went over to the newly located Jowett Car Spares facility yesterday evening. Be aware that you need to phone I.P. beforehand if you are coming in person so that the lads know you're coming, as they have a locked compound in which you can park your vehicle. Suffice it to say that it's surrounded by a 6 foot steel fence topped by razor wire. It's not too easy to find either (for that read perhaps impossible) unless you've asked directions. I used 'Streetmap' and the post-code to get the general location, but needed I.P's input for the final approach.
Having said that, it's a well-ordered facility for our spares, as was seen on the cover of the March edition of the Jowetteer. There are also a few other rooms including toilet facilities and a small kitchen, as well as the main racking room containing the bits and pieces necessary to keep our vehicles going.
It always amazes me how dedicated all the volunteers are every time we visit. It's a hive of activity. The telephone is ringing constantly. Orders are received and recorded, then someone, Simon W or Paul B, goes into the store to pick the items. They are recorded on an invoice by IP, and MKO costs them. Another couple of volunteers, David M and Eddie F, parcel up the items ready for delivery. Graham A was sorting out a pile of various bits, some of which went into the container in the yard.
Now the real reason I wrote this post was to let pre-war owners know that there's a limited supply of new rubber bushes that fit the linkages of the Luvax shock absorbers. These are the bits that you're glad you replaced when the MOT man shakes the shocker arms when the vehicle is on the ramp. They are very hard to come by in the wider world, and autojumble stuff usually isn't of the correct diameters. I bought a few.
Each rubber bush at the moment costs £1.50 and there is of course p&p to take into consideration, but perhaps a couple or more 'in stock' for future use might be worthwhile.
I also bought 4 inlet manifold gaskets for stock for the pre-wars as I never know when I might need them, but surely will in the future. (again £1.50 each).
Jowett Car Spares' advert, usually on the back page of the Jowetteer magazine, states 'JOWETT CAR SPARES SHOULD BE YOUR FIRST CALL, NOT YOUR LAST.'
I couldn't agree more.
Tony.
