Removal of Javelin central bonnet chrome strip

Hello. It's me again, the pain seeking info/advice! Having studied the fixings for the Javelin central chrome strip, I removed the Air Filter to get a better look. I can only assume that I will have also have to remove the Air Silencer Box. Firstly, if I do this should I be able to remove those ‘hard to get at’ two front nuts and bolts? Secondly, if so does anyone know/remember how to remove the Air Silencer Box? As far as I can see there seems to be a central wood screw holding the box to the bonnet but is that it? It’s 40 years since I did this and I simply can’t remember.

Also what is recommended for the seal between the Air Filter and the Air Silencer Box? Is normal domestic draft excluder any good?

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Paul, you are right the Air Silencer Box has to come out to give access to the chrome strip fixings, these are nuts & bolts front & rear. The S/Box is held by two nuts at
the back and a countersunk bolt at the front. A little persuation gets the box down and its well worth checking all the seams & joints, they sometimes split with age.
The seal between S/Box & Air cleaner is made of felt, hope this helps.

Hi Alf.

Just to let you know that I followed your very clear instructions and removed the Air Silencer Box and all the 'so small' nuts without any problem, although there were more nuts than I expected- about six at the front and one at the rear. It might seem like a small deal to you but given my history of tackling 'straight forward' jobs with this car the fact that it went like a dream was a minor miracle!!

Door strips also removed so we are now ready for the re-spray!

Was it your Javelin that was recently an odd yellow colour, or am I confusing it with another one?

Tut, tut! What do you mean, that "odd yellow colour"? It's going to be BL Bronze Yellow ie the colour she is now and has been since 1970. See you at the Rally And I think you WILL see me!
