SECTION ENGINE REBUILD

The Section members began rebuilding a Javelin / Jupiter engine at Kirkliston on Sunday 7th March 2010. During this first session we achieved the following :- Crankcase halves prepared, Trial fitting of balance pipe and testing for leaks, Fitting of crankshaft, Put balance pipe again on test. After six hours it was still holding 25 ins vacuum. All agreed it was a really good session.

Next session on Sunday 21st March at the same venue.

I heard rumours you were organising to video this. Is this right so we can all see how by video in the future???

Alistair, you are perfectly correct. I had trouble sending posts last night. Every time I went to preview it deleted all the post. The above was my third attempt and was a shorter version.

Martin Prentice took video of about 1 1/2 hours during the afternoon which he intends to edit. We also trial fitted the liners and the camshaft.
The first hour was spent with an in-depth discussion on the engine oil system, types of oil pumps, oilway modifications and the inportance of cleanliness of the oil galleries and general working conditions when working on the Jowett engine.

This is the morning after and the vacuum is still holding 25 ins. ( 14 hours since it was put on test )

Well everybody, the vacuum gauge is still holding 25 INS mercury after 48 hours.

The second meeting on the Section Engine Rebuild is this Sunday 21st March, once again at Kirkliston. We should be in a good position to continue from our first session. A lot of bits to prepare and clean now as we get into the " depth " of the project. So overalls this weekend are a must.

Vacuum stil holding at 25 ins of mercury after 10 days !!!!!! wow

Well - We had a really good meeting today on our Engine build. Roger Rutterford came down AGAIN from the Isle of Skye and this time he brought his engine stand onto which we attached the partly assembled Javelin Engine. This made working on the unit a lot easier and offered our excited audience a much better view of the proceedings.

Our first job today was to finish fitting the gallery plugs. A simple job WELL SO WE THOUGHT as one would not go right home. On examination it was discovered that the thread on the plug did not go right up to the undercut. Bob Mackay from Glenrothes suggested the use of a thread file to cure the problem. We then discovered that many present did not know what a thread file was and one member possessed one but had no idea what it was for, so another training function took shape. After its use the offending gallery plug went home with no resistance. A centre punch was used to lock them into position. The bell housing was then test fitted and when found to be OK a new rear crankshaft oil seal was fitted into the housing, a smear of gasket cement was applied around the housing edge and assembly grease was smeared around the crankshaft spigot and the housing was fitted and the nuts tightened. A temporory flywheel was then offered up to the rear crankshaft spigot and it was bolted into position. The TDC and 12 degree marks were indentified so everyone then knew what to look for when timing the engine.

The assembly was then rotated on our NEW STAND. Our next job was to set the valve timing as per the Jowett Maintenance Manual. The audience were shown the correct proceedure and then everyone was given the opportunity to carry out the operation themselves. This was a valuable exercise as all now feel confident to attempt this operation with confidence.

The session finished with discussions on cylinder heads, torque settings and water pumps.

Thanks must go to Ruby in the catering department, Roger for transporting the engine stand 200 miles from Skye, Martin for once again capturing the salient point on video and definately to all the members who attended.

It is envisaged to hold the next session after the Wakefield Rally

Now that the Rally and Jupitour are over, it is time to return to Section Activity. Three Javelins and one Jupiter have entered to partake in the East Lothian Run & Display Day on Sunday 4th July. This is organised by the Scottish Association of Vehicle Enthusiasts ( SAVE ). The meeting point is at the Scottish Mining Museum at Newbattle, south of Edinburgh at 10am.

SECTION ENGINE REBUILD. An additional date has now been added for this project. It is SUNDAY 4th JULY 2010 and the venue is once again at Kirkliston from NOON onwards. Please contact Drummond on 0131 333 3561 for more details or directions.

The section is once again entering a few cars in the South Queensferry Fair on SUNDAY 14th AUGUST Our involvement in this local annual festival is always appreciated. Once again please give Drummond a call.

Sunday 20th February 2011
Well, that's us nearly back on track with this project. At this Tech event we finished off building the cylinder heads and got them fitted. A lot of small points were related to our eager team and, as we know, this is a delicate operation when using the Torque spanner. The ability to spin the engine on the engine stand is definately an advantage as it is possible to have the unit at various angles through 360 degrees. Many "prepared parts" had been brought along in preparation of our final assembly meeting on 6th March. Martin recons we have nearly 25 hours of video on the computer so far. OMG this will require a lot of editing to produce the final DVD. A few reports will appear over the next few weeks.

You're in demand, Drummond! Can you please make sure that the final edit does include any comedy injuries of the rebuild... after all, team SC shared theirs on the internet, I feel it's only fair that the Scottish contingent continue the tradition

Drummond - Do you need costumes - Sharon can always stick something together for you - she has some leftovers from the Harry Potter films and has just completed another film called 'X Men' there must be something among them to suit - How about Sci-fi footwear and leggings combined with your kilt and a wizzard jacket along with a welders face mask ??
