Re: Jowett's Drawing Office, divided into brilliant and not good?

Hello Nick, I guess that I am in partial agreement with you that in an ideal arrangement an O-ring would be supported on both sides of a groove, but I think that its use in our gasket support plate is quite acceptable if the initial crush on the O-ring is observed. After all, in our situation, the p...

Re: Lacking in pulling power

How bad is the problem, i.e. how down on power is it? When I got my first Javelin in 1965, at some point I checked the plugs for some forgotten reason and inadvertently put the plug leads back on the wrong plugs because I assumed that the distributer rotated clockwise. It does not, and so I ran arou...

David, I think that you are referencing this tool? I have one and got the dimensions from it.

Re: Javelin Oil Pump Strainer Assembly

I would agree that the copper pick-up tube failure was likely due to work hardening as a result of vibration. This pipe needs to be steel. The pick-up strainer should have a turned down lip at the far end so that it ensures that the strainer is not restricted by the sump floor. Back in circa 1973 la...

As a matter of interest, what body does your Trojan have; is it a van or an open 4-seater. I assume it is a van since it is a utility. I have a couple of friends who run Trojans regularly. I have driven them on occasion.

Re: le Mans Classic 2023

Super exciting stuff!! Was the crank bearing bore really 1 centimeter low? That is huge. How did you overcome that? The timing chain would not fit for a start. Did you mean 1 mm low?. I like the relieved skirt pistons with graphite coated thrust faces; that alone should be worth a couple of horsepow...

Mike: Ben related that story 50 years ago now over a pint of beer. I think that perhaps it was the shim that split in his case.

Re: Kings Langley garage meet

Keith, that radius between the side of the web and the journal is supposed to be 0.1" minimum [i.e. 100 thou. or 2.54 mm]. That is the value that Charles Grandfield came back with from discussing crank failures with the stress experts at De Havilland, and it is a pretty standard industry value....

Re: Kings Langley garage meet

I have to say that the oval web crankshaft does not look like it is intended for a racing motor (which of course it never originally was). It looks like there is a lot of extra material on it that could be eliminated without detracting from its strength. As it is, it will have relatively high inerti...
