I might have already bought this car!

Is it known to the club?

Regards,
Jonathan.

Hello and welcome! Please let us know if things progress.

There are some cars that still manage to turn up without ever been recorded before but this car is known to the club in as much as it appears in the membership records in the years around the early 1990s. The owner lived in the Berkshire area. Later on it is no longer listed but then pops up again with the present owner. How active it was within the club I cannot say but contacting the appropriate local group may throw up someone who remembers it.

Well I’ve put a deposit down and arranged to collect it in December so I guess it will be mine :)

It will be a departure from the Citroëns and Saabs I’ve owned loved and rebuilt but something I’m immensely looking forward to although I’m sure it won’t be a quick project!

With Citroens and Saabs in your experience you should be well prepared. Try to use the Archive search system accessible via the JowettTalk Library to answer your questions and learn about the marque.

Thanks, I’ve been enjoying myself immersed in the files while I wait for my first JOC magazine to come through:)

I have just realised that this car featured in an article in the February 2018 issue of Practical Classics magazine. Regretfully, like many projects in that publication, after the introductory article it is never revisited and nothing is progressed.

I actually saved this Javelin from what would have been a fateful end to the scrapman just over 3 years ago - I then managed to rehome it - its changed hands since and the reason the story did continue in 'Practical Classics' is purely down to changes in the staff team there - Jonathan - You will find the Jowett Car Club a friendly & helpful club - dedicated to assisting members in keeping or returning their Jowett's to where they they belong 'On the Road' - Although I'm a professional restorer / marque specialist alongside being a JCC committee member - Your Javelin is going to require some extensive work but its still well worth saving - my contacts / knowledge / help assistance is all available on a non commercial basis (I have more than enough work for the next 3 years and I don't need any more) - Just ask - I also have links to Javelin restorations covered on a blog / forum basis if you want to view those in the interim prior to collecting the vehicle just send me a pm and I'll post the links over - there are many more likeminded individuals within the club membership that can assist / advise accordingly - we are all here for the asking - To allow us to put you in touch with members local to you where are you located in the country ? - Chris

Thanks very much for your reply Chris, very interesting to hear some more of the cars back story. I have seen your work and found one of your threads on Retro Rides very informative.

I am under no illusion that this car will need a lot of love! Thankfully I am pretty good with the spanners and a fair welder and fabricator (although not in your league!) so I don’t feel too daunted at the prospect of getting it sound although making it beautiful is likely to be more challenging; initially I will be going for presentable rather than perfect.

The interior looks well shot particularly the woodwork and leather. I’m hopeful I might be able to get a better dash etc second hand but I’m not sure how availability such things are; I’ve joined the club and heard many good things about Jowett Spares but what is actually available seems somewhat opaque!

I’m in the North West in West Lancashire. It’s a shame COVID curtails so many things because I see ordinarily the club is very active.

Hi Jonathan,
The initial contact came through the website and luckily the car was just up the road from Chris so we went and had a look. Our contact with Practical Classic guys through the Restoration show found a home for it.
JCS have most things you will need, just ask via spares@jowett.org
Otherwise post questions or requirements here. Many Jowett owners have a pile of 'spares'!
Please share your experiences of restoration here.

Many thanks Keith, once I have the car in custody I will start a new thread in a more appropriate part of the forum to document my progress.

Jonathan
