On such a nice weekend, time had to be made for a short run out. Stopped to meet a new Scania 50th anniversary model, quite a comparison. How many days this year will we get out!?
This gave me the chance to drain off the gearbox oil when back in the garage. I will refill with fresh oil in due course, the engine oil being changed when i got the car.
No matter how carefully driven, the gear change gives a slight crunch. Having now driven it several times, i feel it is the operation rather than the driver. So, opinions welcome - fresh oil will help? Clutch needs adjustment- is this easy?
A colleague gave me the period photo, as the car is similar to the Short 2. Can anyone identify the maker?

The short two is beautiful, by the way. In my opinion these early 20's cars are the best looking prewar Jowetts.

David - I will shortly write up my recovery of a 1929 gearbox (cracked casing due to teeth failure). If you are seeing 0.5-1mm silver coin shaped elements when you drain the oil (they will father in the well of the plug) you are seeing tooth wear and need to seriously consider repair before a major failure. We had what I would call a clatter on changing, followed by a whine - it lasted a mile or so...the cause was severe wear on the layshaft first/reverse carrier gear - the one that is difficult to see!

With both my pre-wars, they are slow to change whilst the oil is cold, but after a few miles, the ‘slowly does it’ approach to gear change works well. Does Double de clutching help? Also if this only started happening recently, you may want to check your clutch adjustment.

Hi, many thanks - all advice is appreciated, this is my first car this old. I changed the gear oil, the old stuff was clean and no debris in it. The gearbox internals all looked good too. This did help and fully agree, not to be hasty while cold. I may look at the clutch adjustment but I think all is well. Fingers crossed!

Any luck getting a better change, David? Did you work out how to alter the clutch adjustment? I assume you are operating a cone clutch?
