Prewar parts wanted

Hi

I’m looking for a breather/ flap valve assembly and also any hood frame parts or an old/ worn out hood. The car is very oily rag and I would rather reuse an old hood if anyone has kept their old one after changing it, than fit a new one as it will not be in keeping with the rest of the car

Thanks in advance

Paul

And the car of course is a 1929 long 2!

Hi Paul,

I too am looking for a breather flap valve, mine for a 1929 Long four!

I have 'made' one work but it would be nice to know what a real one is supposed to be like.

Check out the post 'Oil leaking from push rods' on this section.

You are never alone with a Jowett!

1. Just wonder if the £8 breather flaps will do for a 1929 (vintage) engine.
2. Oil leaking from push-rods is in the Pre-War section, not this one.
Tony,

Thanks chaps - yes that thread was where I first glimpsed what I was missing! I’m now a fully paid up member so will be getting a breather. The radiator is currently away being recored too

Thanks

Paul

Sorry to put the dampeners on things, but the pre-war breather vane is not suitable for the vintage engine with the early crankcase. this has the leather flap set up. Mind you it would be great if club spares could avail us to a pattern part so that we're not guessing as to the original specification, especially as it is crucial to keeping oil in the crankcase!

This is very useful information, on a number of counts: -

1 What is the cut-off date / chassis number from leather flap to the metal version?

2 Is the leather flap a single piece or is there a metal backing plate / spring like the later versions?

3 Is anyone able to provide a dimensioned drawing of the leather flap? If so, a few experiments should determine the thickness / hardness of leather and then copies could be made / purchased. There seems to be a (limited!) demand for these.

Every little helps (As someone said)!

I’ve just posted some pics in the pre war section of where I think the breather should go on my engine. I think I established last night with Michael at Jowett spares, that it shouldn’t have the stack type so interested in views or alternative pics showing the leather flap arrangement. Thanks Paul
