I was shown how to setup tdc by geoff wills and it was all setup and ready but had to take the engine apart as you have proberly read in previous posts and I can't quite remember how to set it up, Ive looked for notches on the top and bottom gears and found a center punched notch on the bottom and on the top ive found various lines and one nobble, which one would it be? What am I looking for when setting it up? Its hard to remember from minds eye

Not sure if you can do this with a pre-war; simply take out plug and lay a straight wire into the hole to touch the top of the piston. Turn the crankshaft in its normal rotational direction slowly to feel when the wire stops coming out any more. Mark the flywheel or crank pulley at some suitable registration point (I mount a pointer off suitable bolt). You can use Tippex or other correction fluid to do this.

Check the position with a couple of more rotations.

I think you are trying to set up the camshaft / crankshaft relationship?

The actual settings in degrees are in the handbook which is available under 'Gallery'.

Find and check the tdc markings on the flywheel, then get the valves on one cylinder 'on the rock' i.e. exhaust just closing as the inlet just opens.

This is pretty close to 'right', then just check the angles form the handbook.

There will be lots more guidance - watch this space!!
