E2SAL595R body number 405

Post by Srenner »

Neil Belk and I collected 595 last Saturday. Described in Edmund's book as being known since 1970 in poor condition, the body alloy panels survived the weather, but not someone's attempt to create a Jag XK120 bonnet! This car had been modified back in the day and suffered again when the owner decided to discard the body and use the frame for a hot rod. Lots of ambition and no follow through.

In torrential rain highly unusual for So Cal, Neil and I dragged the mutilated frame to his trailer, rolling on a tireless Mustang rim bolted to the Ford 8.8" rear axle. We then pulled the bodywork from a grassy hillside where it sat for almost half a century onto a dolly and put that into chassis and stuffed that into the trailer. The seller claimed there was nothing else left of the car, but we found the steering wheel/column, fuel tank, several gauges and the dizzy. I had crawled into the upper loft and stared right past those the first time. Neil mentioned the horn push and to my surprise, the very disagreeable seller drove to her house and returned with it!

This is likely the end for 595, as it will support the restoration of Jupiters in Oz and anywhere else the parts might be needed. Alloy panels are surprisingly good, scuttle bottoms rotted and battery box bottoms gone. The scuttle bottom and battery boxes sat in the dirt for decades.

Delusional daughter of the deceased owner. Very unpleasant person. Do not want to tell the story here as I will use descriptions and words that are not socially acceptable. It took me several months of email and phone calls to work the deal, as the majority of the body bits head to an OZ buyer.

Originally listed for $100,000. Kept insisting it was worth $6000 at least because a "professional appraiser" valued it that way for probate court. Logic and facts didn't seem to sway ("alternative facts" now seem to be reality). Got the price down massively, but not my place to disclose the buyer's payment and will save hm tens of thousands over reproducing a body and all the steel sub-structure.

Time to get licensed as a professional appraiser so my poor opinions count for something!

I am always amazed how many Jupiters are sitting in the USA unloved, whereas here in a
Australia every Jupiter has a waiting list of potential buyers.
Good memories of Bradfords.
