New Steering Wheel

Can anyone help?

I am removing a tired steering wheel put on the Jupiter in the seventies and am looking at replacing with a wood rim wheel. Big problem is adapting the splined shaft with a boss adaptor as no one has an adaptor specifically for any Jowett. The shaft is about 3/4 inch but how many splines and does it taper? I have been offered a 3/4 inch 48 teeth spline. There are of course other problems like ensuring the new wheel does not restrict the free movement of the gear leaver. Has anybody successfully attached a new steering wheel and if so which make and boss did they use? Is there an easy way to count the splines in a poorly lit garage with seventy year old eye sight? Am I counting valleys or ridges?

Regards to all.

Tony Gunton.

I have fitted new wheels to the Jup but they are smaller diameter which is good if you have thick thighs but not good if you have weak arms.
Some early pics of mine and Amy's car in the Gallery should show you.
Why not get the original restored? I have had them done in epoxy and in wood. May not be cheap but they look better.

I don't think it is listed on their website (https://www.moto-lita.co.uk/) but when I spoke to the Mota Lita people they told me that they can provide a boss for their steering with the correct splines for the Jupiter. Worth giving them a call.

I fitted a Mota Lita 'Derrington' type steering wheel (https://www.moto-lita.co.uk/steering-wh ... al-spokes/) as this is one of the few that they offer that is a 50's rather than a 60's design. I was also able to buy it in 16" which looks more in period than a smaller wheel. I don't speak from experience with their bosses however, as I already had a Mountney boss that could be adapted, but I did use a 1" Mota Lita spacer to avoid a clash with the gearchange when in reverse. This probably isn't necessary on a standard car, but mine has a Morris 1000 steering rack, which I expect buggered up the clearance.

Worth a look on ebay once you have the boss sorted as there are lots of cheaper options for steering wheels (Mota Lita and otherwise) which will fit. eg https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Classic-Wood ... rk:21:pf:0

Off at a bit of a tangent, but I can supply a good quality leather steering wheel rim cover if that would help to allow the original wheel to stay in service

The Jowett spline is 3/4" Dia x 48 straight splines. Only a month ago I cut one for a Jupiter Steering Column I am manufacturing from scratch, so know the figures.
