Timing chains

I notice that timing chains on Javelins and my 1930 car have links with parallel side plates.

Standard roller chain has side plates that are sort of 'bone' or figure 8 shape but are otherwise apparently identical in terms of roller diameter, pitch and width.

Are the two types really interchangeable?

'Proper' parallel-sided link timing chain seems to be in short supply so an alternative could be useful.

Anyone know technical details here?

Hi Ian.
I've read your post, but can't help.

Hi Ian

The timing chain and valve springs I ordered from JCS for my twin turned up a few days ago and the the link for the chain is parallel sided, rather than dog bone. Apparently, the dynamo is nearly done, so I might be able to fit it shortly :-)

Tony/Barry et al:-

Thanks for the replies. It's good to know that supplies are available - at least for now - but I am thinking in the longer term.

I don't know of any engines that are being made with timing chains of the parallel- sided type links,(normally timing belts these days?), but standard roller chain with 1/2" pitch is likely to be around for a while yet.

Anyone else got a view?
