Zenith HZ 30 Carb or Parts urgently needed for 1929 car

I urgently need a good 'slow running tube' or 'slow running device' for a 1929 car.
It is a bronze Zenith HZ 30 (I think! trying to read the stampings on the float chamber...)
either parts in good condition or a complete carb with the parts in good condition.
I want to use and enjoy the car instead of having it at the back of my garage....
Currently only runs on full choke as the tube is cracked and cannot be properly adjusted
ring me on 01606 591726 at any time after 9am (school run before and organised chaos before) until 10pm.
No answerphone so if no reply please try again!
If you havent got the bits but know who has please either ask them to contact me or let me have their contact details.
I did try the Club's Spares service with no joy.
Many thanks
Nigel Plant

I think you will find that the carburettor is a Zenith 30 HZ (Mine is, on a 1930 car).
There is the body of one on eBay at the moment (probably no choke tube though) but they do seem to be thin on the ground.
HOWEVER, if you know what you are looking for (having seen an identical one or a photo) then you MIGHT find such an item amongs an 'odds and sods' pile at an autojumble!

Ian,
Thanks for that you are right.... once I managed to get the magnifier and torch working in unison!
I have looked at the one on e bay.... it is of course missing the slow running tube... but also mine has the petrol feed into the bottom of the flost chamber at 90 degrees to the one on ebay, so on mine the feed goes in from the nearside, whilst if the e bay one was used on a Jowett the feed would be coming in from the front just behind the radiator.
is there a later more prolific carb used on a latter Jowett that I can use until i get the right bits? My car has a vertical flange into the inlet manifold/waterjacket.

I believe the same TYPE of carburettor was used on the Austin 12, but it MAY be of a different configuration (e.g inlet like the one on eBay, or inlet on offside, or possibly different choke arrangement, etc.

Ian,
yes so I believe... but i also understand there are 3 different sizes of slow running tubes and the numbers are stamped on the tube... unfortunately mine had cracked at some stage in the past and been repaired with solder, which firstly meant it didnt seat properly and secondly there was no sign of the numbers....
Chris,
I had previously been in touch withthe carb hospital, with no luck, I have e mailed Eric again, as he might be able to identify it with a bit more info,he has asked me for a photo of the part which I have sent him.
regards
Nigel

'Repaired with solder so no sign of the numbers'
Hmmm . . . .
Would it be possible to VERY carefully file or grind (say with fine wet & dry) the solder leaving the residue actually IN the stamped numbers?
This might render them visible. After all a similar technique is involved with lead filling the inscriptions in gravestones!

I've just purchased a complete 30 HZ in Australia to use on my 1936 7 hp as the carburetor was missing (as was the manifold, strangler, starter, dynamo, front cover, timing system, distributor, coil, clutch, mounts, one barrel/head/piston/con-rod asy, etc, etc! Sorry I can't help you with your urgent need, but if I come across another one, I'll be in touch!
Cheers,
Andrew

Thanks for all the suggestions, I have now bought a new slow running tube from
http://www.austinrepro.com/index.htm they make them for Austin Heavy 12's £12 including postage, buy return.
have put it in the car, tried to start it, when I remebered to turn the iginition on fired straight away.
Now I need to fine tune it I expect, is it just trial and error?

This source is very useful information (for me at least).
My plugs seem to 'soot up' very quickly, the end of the exhaust pipe is very black and I think the main jet may be too big. (Any comments anyone?).
I have often wondered where one might get the spare jets that were apparently available in about three sizes. Now I know!
I have just had a quick look at their website but I couldn't see any mention of the 30HZ carb.
Does this mean that it is the same as the 22FZ that they list or do they have other sizes available but not catalogued?

Ian,
you have to search around
http://www.austinrepro.com/gallery.htm
if you look at the 3rd photo in the coil conversion section it shows various zenith carb spares.
I dont know exactly what they have or what is compatible with our cars (don't think they do either!)
I suppose we need to find an exploded diagram of both our carbs and the Austin Heavy 12/4 (as I understand it they are both variations of the Zenith 30 HZ)

Ah! Got it now! But
The the plot thickens . . .
My carb has a mazak (zinc?) top cover which has a chip missing. No problem, but it would be nice to have a complete one.
However, Austinrepro only list a bronze one. I wonder if this is an exact replica in bronze or simply a cover that fits properly but perhaps lacks the 'ZENITH' inscription? Or possibly mine should be bronze but has been lost and the mazak equivalent fitted? Comments?
I will now investigate the size options they offer for the main jet against my data sheets for the carburettor type and application.

The top of mine is mazak too.
