NEC RESTORATION SHOW – 12TH & 13TH APRIL 2014
The club has been successful in securing a display stand at this new show which is promoted by ‘Practical Classics’ magazine at The National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham – we will have a 3 vehicle display on a ‘Has found, under restoration and restored theme’ The under restoration vehicle will be actively worked upon during the show.
Vintage & classic car restoration is a growing & exciting market and we aim to appeal to potential new members and drive the clubs profile yet higher.
We can be found on stand number 1-449 - close to the Silverstone Auctions stand / Bar / Cafe / WC
HELP NEEDED
Do you have a Jowett restoration project that you are never going to get around to but would like to see the car restored – would you like to offer the vehicle to a new member that the club can encourage & support ? - We will have a ‘For Sale Board’ on display for both restoration projects & on the road Jowetts - for sale – just forward a couple of images along with some details and we will ensure that they are prominently displayed at the show.
Are you currently restoring a Jowett or have you completed a Jowett restoration ? – Again please forward a couple of images along with a few details and we can display them on the stand's boards.
We would appreciate any help on the stand for the setup / weekend staffing / breakdown of the stand – please make contact and we can add your name to the list and find a job for you.

Peter, I don't know quite how to tell you this, but Rhowina is going to be on the stand without a lot of clothes on.

Dress code is casual/presentable - bear in mind that you are probably going to be busy helping me to put a few bits of her back together, so don't wear any priceless white shirts! I may be subcontracting some of the riveting after my experience on the SC...

When we went to the NEC, we parked in the BR NEC Railway station car park. It is an easy walk into the NEC, no queues to get in ( or out! ) and only £5 all day! Don't know if the prices have remained the same, but worth checking out?

Our stand location has been changed and we are now in hall 2 just to the left of the main entrance stand number 2 -258 - you can still purchase discounted tickets on the day I post up further details shortly

In a past existence, when I went to the NEC, I parked for free at Hampton in Arden and then took the train to NEC.

Benefits: free parking, delivery to the site without delays AND the train fare was about £2.50 return.

CHRIS, SHARON, JACK, AMY and PETER and all the helpers from the club have won the best stand award. Well done guys and Gals.

A quick thanks to everyone who helped out and made it the stand that everyone kept coming back to. Volunteers included: Richard Gane, Cliff and Mad Ventris-Field, David Mason, Paul Beaumont, Craig and Glynis Ainge, Les and Nancy White, Rupert Knapton and many more.

It made a huge difference having lots of members around, talking to the public, and our gut feel estimate is that we have probably attracted at least a couple of new members who were very interested in taking on project cars, as well as some lapsed members that sounded very enthusiastic about rejoining the club and getting their projects moving again with a bit of support from the local sections.

I will update with articles and coverage in the press from the show, but my expectation is that we will probably see some coverage in Classic Car Weekly and Practical Classics and perhaps others, interestingly everyone seemed interested in different cars and a different aspect of what we were up to through the weekend.

Peter nearly done with the rechromed Javelin grille on Sunday - an endurance event if ever there was one!

Worth mentioning the front grille, since it has come up in the photos. For anyone attempting to reassemble an early grille, it is entirely doable and well worth it (based on the condition of many of the grilles we have seen from early cars) but requires a couple of tricks. The first is to disassemble from the top down, drilling out the rivets carefully to avoid enlarging the holes in either the supports or the chrome strips themselves. The second is that when reassembling the rivet gun struggles to get onto the rivets without fouling the tabs on the supports behind the grille, the way around this is to use rivets with very long "tails" and also to use a spacer with the rivet gun - we made one out of 4 BA nuts taped together, which means you can rivet from further away without fouling the support above.

Work from the bottom, but attach all four supports from the start. Otherwise as soon as the second slat is fitted you can't get in to rivet the first to any further slats. We found this out the hard way

Surprisingly, if you can't find a good top slat from an early grille, the top slat from the later (more common) grilles is very similar. Before chroming worth making the change, which is to recess the point where the centre strip (missing in the photo above) sits over the top slat. Obviously on later grilles there isn't a vertical centre strip so this is not recessed, otherwise the grilles are the same.

When refitting the top couple of slats there are one or two places where it is simply impossible to get a rivet gun in. To give the same appearance use stainless allen headed bolts, nobody will ever notice the hex vs hole in a pop rivet in these locations, they are almost invisible, but worth getting as close as you can, and use nylocs on the back to avoid them shaking loose.

Finally when riveting be careful. The handles pop together at an alarming rate if you have your fingers between them.

As usual, we wait with bated breath for the magazines to come up with their opinions, but they can hardly be negative with this result.

Spring has - at last - sprung (well down here in sunny Sussex-by-the-sea anyway) and the show season is upon us. It will be interesting to see if there is any feedback there.
