Jowett on T.V

On T.V on 24th of March BBC4 "Motor Racing on the BBC. Good rear view shot of a Javelin GAK 941 ,also a shot of a Bradford waiting at the "new" zebra crossing .Good programme, fantastic early formula 1 shots of the Fangio, Moss and Hawthorne era .

I had in fact recorded this programme but had not watched it yet.

I have now seen the Bradford and the Javelin, sadly I cannot see a number plate on the Bradford, but the Javelin registered GAK941 is very clear.

GAK941 was an early car being a 1949 model and is chassis number 6580 and was supplied by Jowett Cars Ltd to Messrs Swift Lerwick & Sons of Sheffield on 9th December 1949, it was originally black with brown leather trim.

The car does not appear to be a survivor as it has not appeared on our membership lists previously.

Dear Noel, your info on GAK941---6580--- is interesting . It was probably a 1950 model made in late 1949, as was the custom in those days . The 2008 register has 6292 and 6625, both as D9PB, the "PB" being applied to 1950 models. However the car was registered in Bradford, for a dealer in Sheffield . The issue of GAK in batches by Bradford Council ended at end November 1949, but were used up later . Is it possible that the new owner from Sheffield collected his car 6580 from the factory ,registered by them for him? Presumably Jowett made this possible ? To preserve good relations with dealers and allocate the new owner to his "home" Dealer he would be invoiced by and would pay the Sheffield Dealer.

Collecting new cars from the factory was quite common in those days ,often because new cars were normally delivered on the road with trade plates , sometimes at speeds which defied all the running in limitations ! One just hoped it was someone else's car! Car transporters have changed all that.
