FJ Renewal Increase + Jupiter Horn!

Just had my Renewal notice thro from FJ for the Jupe and disappointingly it's gone up 21.5% from £197 to £239.40!

Is such an increase "the going rate" or will they back off some if I argue the point?
Keith

PS I also have a Mitsubishi FTO insured with FJ and here the increase is just under 35%, £295.58 TO £398.40!!

Hi Keith,

Contact Malcolm Oliver for assistance regarding this (details in the Jowetteer) - he has helped various members in recent months with similar problems, and can put you in touch with the right contact at Footman James to assist.

This is not uncommon, most insurers seem to be putting the price up at the moment, but Malcolm is helping where possible to prevent members leaving FJ where possible.

Note I think he is also moving house at the moment, so you may need to check his number in the latest Jowetteer, and he may be a little busy!

Jack.

Tried to get hold of Malcolm Oliver (as suggested by Jack) but the mobile number in the latest Jowetteer no longer connects. Phoned Lancaster Insurance who quoted £206.55 for the Jupiter ( +4.8% cf last year) Footman James were able to "match" without too much argument.

Likewise on my FTO FJ wee able to knock £40 off my quoted price in order to match a competitor's offer.

So I suppose just over £70 saved constitutes a pretty fair result, but another example of little or no reward for loyalty in the insurance world as quite clearly the lower prices could have been offered in the first instance!

Hi Keith,

Glad you were able to get it sorted. Insurance companies generally seem to be putting prices up at the moment, I'm sure they have some bizarre justification for it somewhere...

On to far nicer topics - how is your Jupe doing? Did you get your various troubles sorted?

Amy.

HI Amy,

The Jupe started 2nd push after a 7 month lay up today (once battery had been recharged) and she's booked in for MOT tomorrow. However, lo and behold with even the slightest turn of the steering wheel to the right the horn is now sounding-loud and clear-I believe you know all about this issue!? What's the fix???

More generally I will try and rekindle my wife's interest in attending events in the Jupe over the coming season (some good weather please!) should I fail I fear the prognosis is not too good as living within the M60 our location is such that the potential for casual Jupe use is pretty limited!

Best wishes
Keith

Disconnect the bloody thing. I fitted a push button in the cigarette lighter.

But seriously it is not easy to fix. Quite simply the horn ring circuit in the column is shorting somewhere. Put a meter across the terminal or spade and earth. Then see where it shorts when turning the wheel from lock to lock. You can try repositioning the finger that contacts the ring. Most likely the connection onto the ring inside the column needs fixing. So you need to remove the column. It could be wear in the bearing or packing pieces at the top of the column.

It could also be that the column has moved up too much so that the finger is not in the centre of the brass cylinde that supposed to be insulated from the column. The finger may be touching the column itself. You may be able to adjust by loosening the u bolt holding the column.

The horn push wires on my 1934 saloon exits the column through a grommetted hole. In the past, a wire exiting this hole has lost its insulation, the bare wire touching the metal column. I don't know about the wiring on the Jupiter, but if it does the same as the pre-war, then I'd check this first.

Tony, the Jav & jupiter use a slip ring between fixed outer & rotating inner column which is completely different to the pre 1940 rotating steering column and coiled lead coming out through hole in rotating column setup which I think was ingeniously simple & reliable!

On the SC we had this problem, then subsequently had a problem as a result of the ring system on the Jupiter.

Keith S, does the horn work when the button is pushed? If not, it may be that the bullet connector on the inside of the horn button has come out, and when the wheel it turned it earths against the inside of the column. If it is working, most likely it is the slip ring problem inside. Not too hard to strip down, but can be a bit of a pain to fix.

Automatic horn actuation?

See my post on Wed May 18, 2011, at http://jowett.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f ... ing#p10716 . . . . This may be of interest. Unfortunately I don't remember how I did this, but I do remember what was done to fix the problem

Regards.
Leo.

Jack-The horn does still work as it should when the push is deployed.

Leo-many thanks for your link. I may well revert for more details of your fix if the optimism being shown by my local garage ("that will be something or nothing") who have the car for MOTing proves fruitless-I didn't have the heart to burst their bubble!
Cheers
