Jowett & The Metropolitan Police

Post by Chris Spencer »

I happened to be on mission through WH Smiths yesterday to purchase some OS maps for work, but as always I find myself drawn to the shelves of my interests so ended up browsing through Transport / Motoring. I came across 'Metroplolitan Police Images' 1 Motor Vehicles - Picking it up I knew immeditaly that my other classic 'Rover P6 3500' would feature as this was a great favourite of the met vehicle fleet. However, on the front cover was a group of 1920's Jowetts & Crossleys lined up and ready for service - dig a little deeper and several early images detailing the Met Jowetts are among the pages. Jowett's aside it is really nice book well put together - more images than words and quite nostalgic. I resisted the urge to by it there and then with my other half attempting to drag me out of the shop to go look at girly things which strangely she finds more appealing when shopping with me.

I looked on Amazon this morning and ordered it online they have it on sale for £12.53 + free delivery if you can wait the 3 - 5 days for it, Smiths retail it at £16.99 !

I have scanned a picture given to me by the late Roy Braddock when I was nobbut a lad. It is of the 2nd batch of Long 4's delivered to the Met. Have a look at my page on the gallery.

An item in the 2010 rally auction is a picture of the batch of Long Fours supplied to the Met, lined up in Banbury. Why Banbury? Don't know. There was an active Jowett dealer there, so maybe they did a publicity tour on their way down??
