I do not know about the pre-war but usually they are cork.

Disconnect the battery before doing anything like this, particularly where petrol is in the tank but generally it isn't a bad idea. A stray wire earthing on the tank could be just enough spark to cause a very serious fire or explosion if there is a fair bit of vapour in there.

I now have a working petrol gauge. For the first time in 6 years, well since i started working on the car. My faithful bamboo stick will remain on back up duty, but hopefully will now not be needed. Now I have some more questions with relating what should be on the car in the car, as to where and what. The wooden trim which surrounds the windscreen, on mine goes up half way. Should it go all the way around the screen? Or is it covered by headlining, with wooden strip trim over the top?

Also the horn is mounted on the engine on one of the front timing bolts, is the bracket a simple right angled piece of metal? I wouldnt want to trust that alone? So I was perhaps thinking of making a joint mounted bracket coming from the timing cover bolt and the rear of the dynamo mounting bolt.

Ive been busy tidying up the electrics, and doing a bit more cleaning in preparation for the season ahead. Hopefully a looking forward to a sunny summer on the road in a Jowett.
