I assume you got your ticket to join the fresh MOT club then? That said, with a heated garage I'd have expected nothing less ;) Still can't really feel the end of my nose from the sub-zero 11pm swearing sessions over the winter...

Took the Jup to show to the parents who have been neglected for the last 4 months. I was also waiting for the Post Office to open at 9 to get it taxed. I was assured I no longer needed to fill in a form when I went around at 8.30 and told to come back at 9. After much protestation from the clerk about not having a renewal form, he then found the computer had not yet updated the records to show I had an MOT. Needless to say the process would not accept the paper MOT I waved in front of him. Progress? Damn computers!

So will go on line and see if the things will accept it now.

There was a time I would go to the PO on the way back from MOT and get the car taxed!

That failed as the computer rejected because of changes to the vehicle record!

OK, we did change the colour from cream to green..... So back to the PO.

We may think interest in this topic will now decline; but the journey has only just begun. I expect us to reach 200 replies and 5000 views very shortly.

There is still a list of a few pages of work to be done, with some critical to get to Wakefield. So slacking on the part of the troops is not acceptable.

I must now attend to the SA as it has a couple of thousand miles to do in the next two weeks. It is looking very neglected.

Poor Josephine was looking rather forlorn dad, I think she needs some attention - and possibly some of the parts back that have been borrowed by her partner...!

Anyway, a handful more photos from our efforts. Firstly, the very shiny new door catch and handle:

Last but not least, Napoleon last night, being given a final once over to make sure he was MoT-ready. The numberplate on the front is temporary - we have a lovely smart one (to match the one on the rear) to go on once we have the bumper (bits being brought over by Scott, so should be in place for the Rally).

Another day, another day off I didn't actually stick to, and ended up in the garage by 8:15 to get a few things done.

We had some minor issues last night with the wheel on full lock just contacting the wing, and when going over bumps on the back lane I could have sworn it nudged the top of the wing. The intention was always to swap these wheels and tyres over for some smaller wheels, so tonights job was to do this.

Not a major problem, as Keith is currently sitting on the largest international stockpile of Jowett wheels ever found. Every tarp you look under, every shed you open, there's wheels and tyres everywhere. I guess you accumulate stuff like that when you rally the things, and have 4 jowetts in various condition around the place.

Anyhow, much investigation later, and we have identified 4 different sets of wheels:

Some very large red ones that were on the car for MOT x 5

Silver narrow wheels, believed to be original, with good tyres x 4 (one wheel had been labelled as needing balancing, so we avoided using this)

Silver wide wheels, wider rims than the narrow ones but same tyres x 3?

Black racing wheels with good tyres x 6

One random rim, believed to be same as the silver narrow ones, badly damaged.

Also on investigation it turns out that Keith's car has one of the silver narrow wheels as a spare as well.

So, after a lot of discussion, where it becomes apparent that at some stage Keith has been rallying on two different widths of wheel unknowingly, we decide to check which ones fit correctly on the car, and have the best tread etc.

On the end, the best option was to use the two wider rims on the back of the car, and the two narrower ones on the front. The spare is one of the narrower ones, and the spare in the other Jupiter is also one of the narrower ones. We also have another spare between both cars, but would need balancing really before use, but would do if we had to use it in a hurry.

Seems to make sense, and when fitted the clearances on all are fine, wheel nuts done up and the car is now looking good - red wheels on a green car do look a bit strange.

I had to get home for dinner, so we stopped there after putting away half a dozen of the wheels we weren't using.

Cleared up the debris in the garage before putting Napolean back in next to Josephine.

Ordered wiper blades, tonneau fixings, petrol pressure limiter and spare petrol pump points from Paul Beck. Wiper grommets and bumper rubbers arrived from Tony from JOAC spares.

Made the new list of things to do before Wakefield and then started on the jobs for the SA. Made the corner plates for the windscreen; but will wait till Chris comes back to fit them.

When Jack came around we unearthed the 13 wheels I have spare fitted with various racing and rally tyres. This is because the high profile ones on the SC rub on the wheel arches. Chose 5 which are all painted silver and checked clearance was OK. Jack said that Amy must not drive the car like a rally car though.

Master cylinder is playing up by loosing pressure if you slowly depress it. May have to fit the spare.

(Actually I don't think I dare rally drive my Jupe - I'm not sure I can face another rebuild just yet...!)

Slight ammendment to wheels inventory. The spare rim is a damaged wide wheel. These wheels were also welded to strengthen them and prevent cracking. The effectiveness of this welding is clear as the only place that cracks appear is where the weld was just skipped by a mm. Weld is around the holes and the wheel cap studs, plus a zig-zag all around the curved section. The damaged wheel was replaced by another which was welded up; but was not a widened rim. Perhaps that explains some of the cornering! The racing and desert rally wheels were made from steel twice as thick as Jowett standard; but then they were not carrying 5.25 inch crossply rubber but sticky radials.

The set of standard wheels were on the Jup when we last went to Scotland. You may have noticed me changing them in the hotel car park as one was un-balanced. My memory is fading; but I think there is a problem balancing it. If I have time I may take it to the only place that can do them around here.

I must look at some pictures but I think we did the 1989 Pirelli on the red wheels that were fitted to the SC. Drums, was that the one where the wheel nuts were loose at the top of a mountain? Not the incident in Cortina where the wheel did come off I think that was 1990.

Showed Jack where to look for cracks on the wheel. Make sure all of you do that before setting off, and torque up those wheel nuts, but not more than 35ft.lbs as you will stretch the studs. Most garages over-tighten. I have lots of necked studs.

Another night, and despite a family wedding tomorrow, we have more work to do.

Wheel came off, brake drum off, and we had a bit of a check for rubbing - there was a slight noise from them probably due to a worn taper, so the brake drums had to be ground down slightly to clear the back of the drum.

Sounds simple, in fact it meant taking the things off, putting them back on, taking them off again, then on again, then tightening everything up lots and putting the wheel back on.

I started work on the door stays so they won't open too far, managed to get the old ones stripped and cleaned, but haven't got these fitted yet as we need to get the doors wide open to fit them easily and check they are adjusted correctly.

Not much more to report, though we are making progress. Just one more job before we can leave for the rally - there seems to be a minor issue with the master cylinder as when pressed slowly it will depress to the floor, when pressed more quickly no such problem. Keith will be investigating this weekend.

Managed to convince Sharon that it was a good idea to shelter in the only internet cafe in Santorini whilst the only rain of the holiday came down. Only just finished reading the 2 pages of updates (Sharon's gone off to buy a dress she likes) - well done in getting the MOT test sorted - sounds like there is still a little work to get done though - and no way is the car going to Wakefield with paintwork damage - the plane lands mid morning tomorrow so I should be with you in the afternoon to commence paint damage rectifaction and polishing / SA windscreen refitting. See you all soon.

Tax now received. 20 minute wait and 30 sec processing. Just cause the registration document (V5, not V5c)) had not seen the light of day since 1979! Just glad I updated it then as they would have had to process an old log book.

Anybody else coming to visit us this weekend?

We have two from British Columbia (I like that there is still something British out there) and two from California staying here before the migration to Wakefield. I hope they fit the overalls we have waiting for them. Ye of little faith......

Quick half way point update, managed to escape from the garage for half an hour.

Tonneau fittings going on, the 4 across the front are in and sorted, now doing the poppers round the back so Amy doesn't get too wet next weekend :)

Chris whipped the winscreen out in seconds so we could drill for the front fixings, we're going to fit the trim sections under the windscreen and then it can go in, hopefully for the last time!

Chris has started remedial work following the ramp incident, lots of finger pointing about that, but we all know who was responsible...

The seat came out, and the floor is unbolted, this will need to come out for the master cylinder to go in, that should be a lot easier without the floor in and it's relatively easy to remove and replace so worth doing to make sure the master cylinder goes in and out quickly.

Anyhow, back off to get on with finishing off the tonneau. Should be all done fairly quickly, but nothing is easy on this project :(
