I am not sure whether the previous posts really cleared the reason for the red portion on the boot light?

I believe that this lens would be for an early Javelin, where the number plate was on the boot lid. The single bulb would then show red to the rear, but still throw sufficient white light onto the number plate.

The Standard cars, which came later, have the number plate on the boot lid, but have a conventional Lucas number plate lamp just below the number plate.

The car which Jack showed ( LDD 593 ) has the later De Luxe bumper/number plate fittings. Not sure why there is a seperate isolated lamp on the boot lid though? Perhaps someone has used an early Javelin one, and then scraped off the red paint? The handle looks like it is from an early Javelin.

My Javelin is a 1950 De Luxe and it has the number plate fixed to the boot lid, with the red portion at the top, and the clear portion lighting up the plate.

You are right! I have looked at our 1950 De Luxe and she has the arrangement that you mention. I reckon that it must have been later De Luxe Javelins that had the number plate fitted into the bumper?

Hi David,

I think you are right about later cars - all the 1953 Javelins I've seen have the numberplate mounted on the rear bumper, and the light on the boot is clear. Earlier cars have it mounted on the boot lid, but I wasn't aware of the arrangements on numberplate lights and reversing lights.

From discussion with Alf Heseltine regarding his boot lid, it seems that there were images of the very last cars due to come off the line in 1954 were to have the numberplate back on the boot lid in a different style of housing. He has reproduced this on his car, the only one of its type.

Yes Jack, this would have been the 1954 rear light & No. plate treatment for the Javelin had Jowett production continued,
