If Jowetts were still in production, the probability is that the club would have split similar to Jaguar, Austin or MG into model or era specific clubs. JCC almost did that with the set up of a pre-war register in the 70's as well as the existing Jupiter Owners Auto Club. The split with the members of the Southern Jowett Car Club really came about because the Javelins were being retired yet the members still wanted the social interaction using their cars. The Jowett owners thus split to form the national Jowett Car Club to leave the members mainly without Jowetts continuing in the Southern Jowett Car Club.

Another possibility is that autonomous regional clubs would have been formed, as we have with the North American Jowett Register, Australia and New Zealand and Danish clubs. The way forward in this age of the Internet is to combine our resources to get the best of both worlds with cooperation on technical and social aspects. Financial and managerial control is another matter as all governments whether national or regional experience.

As I have said before such splits and amalgamations would also have occurred to Jowett should they have survived 1954. Would they have become part of Ford, would they have just made sports cars , would they have split into commercial and private vehicle divisions, would they have assembled parts from Japan? What effect would the leadership of the company had on car design?

I hope we make contact with Edward Otter and Derby College to progress this discussion.

I think that the Jupiter replacement is on the market now. Look at the new Subaru/Toyota sports cars. Flat four engine in front, driving through the rear wheels. Perhaps JOC should approach Subaru to see if they would offer a convertible with the name Subaru Jupiter! I trust that JOC have the rights to the Jupiter name, because then they might be able to earn a fee for its use. On the same theme, Chrysler probably owns the Javelin name, because they acquired AMC who had marketed a Javelin model. What about Bradford? JOC should get that one registred in their name as well.

Trademark law is complex and the club would not have the resources to contest any infingement even if the name was a registered trademark of JCL and was still valid!

http://www.uktrademarkregistration.co.u ... -name.aspx

It already registered in the vehicle section on https://www.trademarkdirect.co.uk/result but will cost £15 to find out who by!

The Toyota type 86 was featured in this weeks 'Top Gear' (Well followed TV motoring Programme in the UK) but the car was slated for it's lack of road holding / poor choice of tyres etc

At the end there of JCL with Roy Lunn as Chief Designer and Donald Bastow as Chief Engineer, an interesting new car could have resulted had the company had the finances. Bastow was a very capable designer having worked for Lagonda under W.O. Bentley, as an example. Lunn was much younger but had worked for Claude Hill at Aston Martin. Claude Hill went on to be the design influence at Harry Ferguson Research where five gradually evolving research cars were built, all with flat four engines and with all-wheel drive. HFR was a vehicle design consultancy, and given the connection between Lunn and Hill, I think that a very plausible scenario could be envisaged in which JCL would have licensed a HFR base design, in which case they would have ended up with a chassis not unlike the Subaru with front-mounted engine and all-wheel-drive.

For Jowett to survive into this century the answer may have been to get out of car manufacture and switch to construction equipment ie mini diggers and similar developed from the Bristol Crawler. Who Knows we might all be asking for a JOWETT not a JCB.

How about crowdsourcing as a way to come up with a design for a 21st Century Jowett?
Last year I attended a presentation at the Engine Expo North America and sat in on some of the presentations here: http://www.ukintpress-conferences.com/c ... php?n=conf
One of the presentations was by Local Motors with the presentation here: http://www.ukintpress-conferences.com/u ... maller.pdf
The presentation is very long and I think that the author may have been on whacky-weed when he put it together, but nevertheless it attempts to cover the design and build of a crowdsourced car, in this case "The Rally Fighter" which is a very non-Jowett sort of a car but which presumably appeals to the younger crowd who designed it. Looking at the website: https://forge.localmotors.com/ it looks as if other vehicles have come out of this initiative beyond just the Rally Fighter.

Anyway, it is just a thought that JowettTalk could become a focal point for a crowdsource project for the conceptual design and specification of a modern Jowett, which is essentially what has already been proposed further up the thread.
