RALLY 2009
Keith, Just get yourselves to Bideford for Friday. I recon your Jup could do it on its own. We intend leaving Tuesday and plan to arrive at the hotel on Thursday. We are preparing for a wet run down according to the forecast so working on the hood today tracing the odd leak, on Ruby's side. Suggested she should pack a black bin bag to catch the odd drip. !!!!! She said the odd drip was in the drivers seat. ????.
So, see you all Thursday or Friday. Drummond

Jowett Rally 2009 Bideford
Hi Drummond,
We plan to travel down to the hotel on Wednesday and, like everyone else, hope that the weather improves. It was chucking it down earlier this morning!
Hope everyone has an excellent and safe journey. Thinking about the miles travelled by everyone attending added all together, this rally must be one of the highest ones in the UK for overall Jowett/miles to rally and home again?
Take care en route!
All the best,
David

Didn't they do well
Back at work today, but reflecting on a great event, extremely well put and held together by the South West section. Thank You Ladies and Gentlemen of that section.
The weather was brilliant literally, the company and venue top notch.
Well done to all involved

Just back from a super NJW at Bideford.
Everything ran smoothly and the hotel was spot on.
Thanks to all the South West team. The family atmosphere just gets better and better.
'Sarah Jane' covered 820 miles with only a couple of hic-coughs; a fractured Y-pipe thanks perhaps to the lovely pot-holes in the A38 on the way down, and a short circuit on the klaxon on the way back, which gave rise to lots of smoke from under the dash board at 40 mph on the A461 going downhill.
Whilst trying to sort the melted wiring at the side of the road, who should come by and stop to help????? ....
Was it a bird? Was it a plane? No, it was Superman (also known as Bernard)!
I'm looking forward to next year's 100th anniversary already.
If you can't wait so long, there'll be quite a number of us at the Ex-employees get together at the Bradford Industrial Museum in August.
Best wishes to all.
Tony.

Yes Tony, It was a great Rally. Glad you got home OK. Th Jupiter,s cooling fan fused in heavy traffic around Oxford on Tuesday afternoon giving a bit of concern but it did not overheat. We are still in Warwick and will not be returning home till next week. Roll on August. Covered over 900 miles so far. Enjoying it.

Seems your electrics need an overhaul, Drummond! What is next to go?
We enjoyed the drive back, and indeed the whole weekend as we did not need to put the hood up for all 5 days. Almost a first for British weather.
Meeting a few Jowetteers at the Haynes Museum put a fitting end to the rally. Good to see the Javelin there; but no Jupiter. In its place was a Rochdale Olympic in which I have done many rallies.
Started getting the Jups rear wing fixed just waiting for assessor to give go ahead.
Now back to the Javelin overheating and fitting bigger main jets.

JOWETT RALLY , BIDEFORD
Well, thats us just arrived home after what can only be classed as a " Rally worth attending ". The Jupiter has covered nearly 1400 miles in the two weeks with only two "WEE " problems.
1. After my massive emergency stop on the Torridge Bridge when returning from the scenic run on the Saturday the fuse box cracked ( Non-Jowett one fitted with 12 continental fuses). This was patched up in the hotel car park using bits of wire and superglue very kindly lent to me by several members. Alastair Gregg done all the collecting and scrounging !! THANKS Alastair. This temp repair lasted until when on the Oxford by-pass the colling fan fused ( Thank God it did as the temp fuse was red hot.) I had fitted a lower value fuse in error in the car park. We got to Warwick without any more problems and next day obtained a few in-line fuses with leads. They were fitted as a get it home measure and we had only one other fuse go. Yes - cooling fan again. I did not have any 25 / 30 amp so stuck in a 20. The fan was required as we were in the Peak District with an air temp of 26 C. But it done the job as we had no overheating. ( More Later )
2. The only other problem was after leaving Warwick last Friday we were on the M6 toll road - in the outside lane as one does - when we suddenly started to lose power. Is that the fault of fitting the overdrive I was suddenly asked - just when you are trying to concentrate - and get the car safely off the carriageway. A very loud rattle / clicking noise was apparent as the car slowed down. What the hell is wrong now - I thought. I got it safely onto the hard shoulder where the enging just died and would not restart. The incessent rattle was in fact the solid state Facit petrol pump struggling to obtain fuel. We had over a half a tank so it had not run out. I had the Jupiter fitted with TWO in line fuel filters, the first for half bricks and the second is a fine cartridge filter inside a glass tube. This had been replaced before leaving home when the car was serviced and again given a visual check at Bideford where it was spotless.
This time it was totally brown and gunged up with muck. What a place to do a repair.
I managed to get to car nearly off the hard sholder onto the grass so it was about 10 feet from the inside carriage way. IT HAD TO DO. both filters were removed and both were totally full of brown muck. I had not packed a spare cartidge so it was cleaned as best I could do. The other was cleaned in fuel and both were refitted at breakneck speed. The fuel pump soon done its job and refilled the carbs and we were off on full power. The last time we had taken on fuel was on the Oxford by-pass and it must have been a bad fill. Previous to that was Morrisons at Bideford. A small ammount of sludge has came threw since that but has not created a problem. SO not more problems.
I located a new fuse box on the internet and ordered it. It was waiting for me on returning home last night. This is a sixteen way with blade fuses and is in the process of being fitted as I speak..
THE JOYS OF JOWETT MOTORING. Since leaving the rally we visited Haynes Museum at Yeovill, Stonehenge, Oxford ( enough said ) Warwick, Peak District, Yorkshire moors and the Lake District before returning home via the Scottish Borders.

Scrounging and Gunge
Hello Drummond
Glad you made it back in one piece (ish). Scrounging is second nature so think nothing of it. It has to be said though that Jowett folks are generous to a fault so it wasn't even a scr never mind a scrounge.
One complaint though, you didn't stop by in the Peak District, or if you did you didn't let us know so the NW section could have at least welcomed you onto our turf.
It would have in some ways been quite a flashback if you'd called for a first aider name of Gregg, when your petrol turned to sludge wouldn't it? Maybe I should delete the word flashback when talking about Petrol.

Well I ask you!
The A515 goes to within about 3/4 of a mile of my house. Standing instruction from now on then, when you see the sign for Earl Sterndale use your trafficator and head towards us.
Saturday was mainly a Jupiter play day too.
A missed opportunity, but hopefully not for ever.
That part of Derbyshire is full of dales. Cowdale, King Sterndale and Earl Sterndale are all within 2 miles of one another.

Jowett Rally 2009 Bideford
Hi everyone,
Home again after a really super rally. The hotel was good, the food good and the weather - well how did the South West Section manage it?? Wall to wall sunshine!
I think it was summed up by a remark I overheard on the Concours field, "It really doesn't get any better than this".
Sincere congratulations and thanks to Geoff Wills and the whole rally team. It was a memorable week and has many happy memories. A landmark rally!
One thing that really reveals our friendly club in it's true light was the spirit of real helpfulness and cooperation when a fellow member had any kind of mechanical problem ( and there were a few). Out came the tools and spares were shared - just what our club is about.
Many thanks to everyone,
David and Juliet
