2011 Cotswold Tour and Prescott Open Classic Hill Climb – May 13th – 16th

Dear All

We trust that you are well and as we hurtle towards the depths of winter we are even more eager to see the start of the new 2011 season. We would like to invite you to what has become our annual pilgrimage to the Cheltenham Cleeve Vale Rotary Club’s 8th Prescott Speed Hill Climb and Open Classic Event linked with our own Cotswold Tour.
It is a non-prescriptive weekend and we have highlighted a number of possible options; the weekend is about choices with you selecting a combination which may best suit your needs.

If you don’t have SAT VAV, you are advised to bring a reasonable road atlas to help find your way around rural Gloucestershire. We will provide a laminated Road Plate and ties for your Jowett showing who we are what we are doing….!

Please remember that you have to make your OWN booking with the Rising Sun Hotel (details below) AND with the Rotary Club for the Prescott Hill Climb –( you can of course choose to do the Rotary Club’s Cotswold Tour on the Saturday 14th May if you so wish) – using the attached forms.

Accommodation - We have provisionally reserved 10 en suite twin/double room at The Rising Sun Hotel, Cleeve Hill, Nr. Cheltenham, Gloucester GL52 3PX and have negotiated a 3 night room rate based on two sharing of £195 B&B ( £65 per room per night ) plus the option of a three course dinner for two for £20 (subject to the ‘special’ menu) making £85 per room per night for ‘half board’ which we believe represents good value! Alternatively, there is a wide range of food options available and each evening we should all be dining together and meals and drinks will be billed separately on an individual room basis. The hotel which provides our ‘base’ for the weekend, commands views to the west over Cheltenham and the Racecourse; and to the north over Winchcombe and the Malverns. The peak of Cleeve Hill is the highest point (1,083 feet) both of the Cotswolds and in the county of Gloucestershire..and…”Did you know ..travelling directly eastwards from this summit, there is no higher land mass until the URAL MOUNTAINS in Russia”

Please make your individual reservation at The Rising Sun Hotel http://www.risingsunhotel.com/
Telephone – 01242 676281 Fax- 01242 673069 Email – 9210@greeneking.co.uk
The named contact is Front of House Manager is Emma Booth and please quote Jowett Car Club when making your reservation

We would encourage you to respond promptly as we are advised that these rooms can only be held until 31st January 2011.

Cotswold Tour- Please see Our Programmes options below.

Prescott Hill - There are two options for the Prescott event on Sunday 15th May. (1) The PADDOCK with two opportunities to drive your JOWETT on the famous ‘Hill’ or (2) the ORCHARD for a track side static display and a Cavalcade Parade up the ‘Hill’ during the lunch interval. For each location the Jowetts will be parked together as TEAM JOWETT. During the day there will be ample opportunity to visit the on BUGATTI TRUST building housing many fine pieces of engineering and explaining the mystique surrounding the BUGATTI name. The Rotary Club will confirm your personal booking for the Prescott event and advise you of the PASS & ENTRY NUMBER of your chosen option. We will be liaising with the Rotary Club throughout and will prepare your individual laminated windscreen cards bearing the title TEAM JOWETT and incorporating your PASS & ENTRY NUMBER. These will be handed out at The Rising Sun on Sunday morning.

Our Programme options for the weekend-

Arrive Friday 13th May- check in at The Rising Sun from midday. Your room should be ready after 2pm, however, if you are early you can unload and store your luggage whilst you take a walk up the tracks to the ridge for some spectacular views (its quite ‘demanding’ and appropriate footwear is suggested), or have a spot of refreshment in the bar, (sitting in the bar is less ‘demanding’ and requires no special footwear and the views are still spectacular) or take a local bus ride (bus stop just outside the hotel) south into Cheltenham. Route 606 leaves Cleeve Hill 12.28pm or 2.04pm and from Cheltenham for your return journey 4.15pm or 5.20pm. We will reserve a group table for evening dinner for 8pm.

Continued…./

Saturday 14th May- An optional Cotswold Tour - You may have chosen to do the Rotary Club’s Cotswold Tour (see booking form for details) or you can opt to do a circular route of around 50 miles and pick and choose where or for how long to stay. Spend a few moments checking out your road atlas and plot your tour route….or…..plan a rural walk…or…..take the local public transport (bus stop outside Rising Sun) south into Cheltenham (check timetables Route 606- 09.12am or 10.44am )or north to Broadway.(check timetables Route 606 - 09.13am or 10.13am)
However, if you are opting to drive -
Turn right onto the B4632 from The Rising Sun between 9.30 and 9.45 for the 7 miles drive through Winchcombe.
(A) Visit the Winchcombe Railway Museum on the left hand side as you enter the town (check opening times)
Or through the town to the preserved steam railway G&WR at Toddington (GL54 5DT) http://www.gwsr.com .
(B) You can catch the 10.30 steam train for the 90 minute return journey through the countryside to Cheltenham Racecourse, returning around 12 noon. There are refreshments available at Toddington Station and you can opt to tarry awhile, enjoy the nostalgia buzz and visit the on site attractions.
(C) However, you may prefer to visit Sudeley Castle, (GL54 5JD), near Winchcombe, which boast 1,000 years of history and the final resting place of Katherine Parr. Please note the opening times are from 10.30am. You could then rejoin the B4632 and drive on to Toddington .
(D) and / or go on to visit the nearby Hailes Abbey, the National Trust’s 13th Century Cistercian Abbey found in 1246. (GL54 5PB).
(E) or try a visit to ADAM’S FARM - Cotswold Farm Park –[as seen on BBC TV Countryfile] http://www.cotswoldfarmpark.co.uk On the B4632 at the crossroads / roundabout at Toddington take the right exit onto the B4077, drive through FORD [the place not a river crossing] turn right at the crossroads with the Bourton on the Water and Broadway road and follow the brown signs for 1½ miles. Tea rooms, gift shop, Safari Farm Ride, rare breeds etc
(F) or from Toddington drive on the B4632 to Broadway,The Jewel of the Cotswold, turn right at the X roads as you enter the village and into the High Street. Take the left turn after the Broadway Clock and into Leamington Road. At the roundabout turn right onto the A44 and the long climb up Fish Hill, this will really test your torque, at the top of the hill turn right to The Broadway Tower and Country Park (WR12 7LB) http://www.broadway-cotswolds.co.uk From this vantage point on a good day you can see 14 counties. The adjacent Rookery Restaurant can provide light lunches, teas, refreshment etc.
From here you can opt to drive through very rural Gloucestershire to
(G ) – SNOWSHILL MANOR (WR12 7JU) National Trust property; set in the village of Snowshill where you can explore the treasures collected by one man with an eye for the unusual. Be intrigued by the story of Charles Wade, be amazed by his huge and varied collection from around the world and relax in the peaceful hillside garden.
OR / AND
(H) Ford, where you cross the B4077 and drive via Kineton, and Naunton to the quintessential Cotswold villages of Upper Slaughter and then Lower Slaughter. Lower Slaughter sits beside the little Eye stream and is crossed by two small bridges and is known for its unspoilt lime stone cottages in the traditional Cotswold style.
If you can find somewhere, it is worth parking and walking up to the Old Mill, but is it often very busy. From Lower Slaughter right onto the A429 Fosse Way head to
(I) Bourton on the Water. You can opt to take the second left turn and enter the village via Lansdowne Road and try and find a parking space, it is usually quite busy at weekends. Alternatively, take the first left turn into Station Road and park in the school playing fields. This car park is supervised and run by volunteers and there is a small charge. From here you can take the short walk into the town centre where there are a number of options. Sit by the River Windrush and take in a cream tea, visit the Motor Museum (well worth a visit), the Model Village, and Model Railway or simply stroll around this picturesque village.
From Bourton head back to the Fosse Way and turn left to join the A429. Take the right fork after a few hundred yards to join the Old Gloucester Road A436. After a few miles turn right to Hawling and then onto Winchcombe passing Sudeley Castle on your right. Turn left in Winchcome for Cleeve Hill and The Rising Sun in time for a sherry before the evening meal and watching the sun set over the Malvern Hills.

Sunday 15th May – Prescott Open Classic Hill Climb
Remember to put your Paddock Pass or Orchard Pass sticker on the windscreen. We should aim to leave The Rising Sun around 9.30am and head north to Winchcombe, passing Castle Street on your right and onto the High Street. Where the road narrows look for a sharp right turn into North Street sign posted GRETTON. Follow this road out of town through Gretton Village and turn left at T junction immediately after passing under the railway bridge. Follow road to Prescott Speed Hill Climb. The Marshalls should direct you into your place whether you have chosen Paddock or Orchard. We will be grouped together in the appointed areas as TEAM JOWETT. Spend the day at the ‘Hill’, do the business and then back to the Rising Sun for the evening meal and to talk about what might have been…and if only…!

Monday 16th May – Fond farewells until the next time. You may wish to stay a while longer and re-visit some of the local attractions you missed on Saturday before finally heading homewards. Whatever your choice, thanks for you company and we hope you had a great time.

8th PRESCOTT HILL CLIMB OPEN CLASSIC CAR EVENT 14/15 MAY 2011
Sponsored by AUTOGLYM , BRIGHTWELLS,
PETER JAMES INSURANCE and MARTIN CHISHOLM COLLECTORS CARS

Cheltenham Cleeve Vale Rotary Club invites classic car owners to an event to be held on the weekend of 14th and 15th May 2011. The event is open to all pre-1980s vehicles but exceptions may be made at the discretion of the organisers for particularly interesting vehicles.

Sunday 15h will be devoted to display and driving the famous hill, with passengers if you wish, in marshalled but un-timed runs. Un-timed runs eliminate the need for crash helmets and the full gamut of safety equipment etc. However vehicles must have valid road tax, MOT and insurance documentation. The Paddock entry fee is £46 per vehicle [inclusive of 2 runs up the hill all passengers and a souvenir programme]. Entries are limited to 200. Additional runs if available will be £5 each.
As before, we will also be having a static display in a designated area of the Orchard for classic, vintage and special vehicles. For those who wish we will also be repeating the gentle cavalcades up the hill so that vehicles can be displayed in motion to the attending public. We feel this significantly enhances the presentation of the superb range of vehicles expected. The Orchard [static] entry fee is £18 per car which includes all passengers, a free programme and a cavalcade drive up the hill. Block bookings by Clubs will be particularly welcome and we will endeavour to park such groups together.
On Saturday14th we are offering a 60 mile Cotswold tour with a break at Prescott, where you will be able to buy lunch at the Club House. The starting point is yet to be decided.
Spectators will be welcome on the Sunday at £15 per car with free parking, souvenir programme and pedestrian access to the Paddock etc.
All profits will go to Charities supported by Rotary and in order to maximise this, we are asking for your cooperation to treat the entry fees as donations to charity so that we can reclaim tax.
Please make every effort to supply an Email address as that helps us a lot.
