brake layout

I have an early 2 wheel braked car, but with later axles. Early cars had foot brake on transmission, hand on the rears. So I need to convert. The car has a horrid later cross shaft added to pull the 4 brakes from the foot, and rears again from the hand, but what was the original layout/operation method for the early 4 wheel braked cars please? Any pictures appreciated! Many thanks, James
