Derrick Bridger, 100 years old.

Why not tell us about your car (start with a picture) and say what you have done with it; either restoring or using it over the years. Restoration of particular parts is of special interest. Club members can have their space on in their Personal Album to do this.

Derrick Bridger, 100 years old.

Post by Forumadmin »

Derrick Bridger, surrounded by the 25 members of his family, celebrated his 100th birthday at the weekend. Four generations met in the function room at The Barge Halberton, to mark the occasion. Like others of his age, he saw his father go off to the first world war and was in the RAF for the second world war. Participating in the diversionary tactics which helped keep the launching of D-Day quiet, Derrick says, “There were lots of lorries and troops being driven all over the place in the run-up to D-Day, although most of us had no idea what was actually happening.”

Leaving school at the age of 14, he joined Colas accounts department and subsequently become an accountant, working for Shell Oil. Although his career was interrupted by the war, he continued to work at Shell House in London until his retirement in 1967, when he and his wife Elsie retired to the West Country. “Most people left school at 14,” Derrick says, “ but there were free evening classes, provided you kept up your attendance. I was fortunate to be able to get my accountancy exams through those evening classes.” Sadly his wife Elsie died in 1991.

He was actively involved in the British Legion in Limpsfield Surrey before his retirement, being presented with a commemorative tankard for 15 years service. He bought his first car in 1934, which was a 1925 2-cylinder Jowett 7. As the Jowett Car company celebrates it’s 100th anniversary this year as well, his sons have arranged for him to be reunited with a Jowett 7, later in the year. “The car had wooden floorboards,” reports Derrick. “If the brake linkage came to pieces, which it did quite often, you had to take up the floor boards to repair it.” Derrick lives at Somerville House in Willand. “I’ve now managed to be retired for more years than I worked,” says Derrick.
It is a shame we could not get a Jowett along to Derrick's celebration; but we will try to get one along soon, won't we? Contact Forumadmin if you can get one to Devon for Derrick to see.

Well, we'll all wish Derrick a Happy 100th Birthday especially as he is a most discerning chap having chosen a Jowett as his first car.

I really like the photo. It shows the car as it was in the thirties, quite an original vehicle without fripperies.

Let's hope Derrick sees a vintage Jowett shortly. I'm sure it will bring back happy memories.

Tony.

Hi Tony,

Do you know if Derrick did meet a Short-Two again last year, it would be nice to see a picture if he did.

Sorry Noel, I don't know.

As the first post came through Forumadmin, perhaps he can enlighten us.

Willand is near to Crediton and Tiverton in Devon - I've just looked it up in the Atlas of GB. The names brought back many memories of our family trips to Truro in Cornwall in the late 50's from up here in Lancashire.
