Jupiter Exhaust
Can anyone please tell me where I can obtain a Jupiter exhaust ?

You could (less than a year ago) get them in mild steel from Jowett Car Spares. You may know more than I now. If not please re post and I will look into it.

Thank you for your ''festive message'' it was much appreciated.
Late last year I came across a real ''barn find'' Jupiter which is in incredible condition, only requiring a new floor, engine rebuild and minor welding.
The car is very close to going back on the road all ready for the Shropshire event early next year.
There are two problem areas that I would be grateful for your assistance:
1) I need a Jupiter exhaust - any ideas ?
2) I have rebuilt the engine which runs magnificently and ticks over perfectly and revs as you would expect.
However the oil pressure on tick over is very low, but increases to 40 lbs when you rev the engine.
It does not run hot and there is not any sign of anything wrong at all.
The oil pump had minimal wear and the cam followers were a good fit.I have even had the sump off again and fitted a paper gasket in the oil pump with no improvement in pressure.
Do you have any suggestions as to what could be causing the problem ?

There are hundreds of people in the club who know Jowett engine problems better than I, but an idea: Some years ago, I rebuild a Healey engine, and had oil pressure problems as you describe. It turned out to be due to a tiny bit of dirt which was stopping the oil pressure relief valve from closing correctly. The Healey and Jupiter pumps are similar, if not identical.
In the technical notes, there is mention of low oil pressure when blocks drilled for hydraulic tappets are fitted with solid tappets. But this should not affect high spead pressure, I understand.

On your question about low oil pressure, there could be several reasons.
Yes, the oil pressure relief valve could be sticking.
If the block was drilled for hydraulic tappets and solid ones have been used, this will give frighteningly low pressure, but only usually on tick over. At speed, the pressure should be normal, ie at 65 psi, or higher.
However, on balance, my best guess would be that you have wear on the main shells. These shed lumps of white metal, in patches around the shell when worn, and the oil streams out.
It might be worth looking to see if there is a leak of oil from the rear main shell bearing into the clutch housing? Normally, the oil seal in the bell housing should stop this, but if the engine has been stored for some time, this might be leaking, especially, if there is a significant blow-out of oil from a worn rear set of main shells.
Advice on what to do next? Either disconnect the oil gauge or think about an engine strip-down? I would go for the first, until the rumbling from the shells gets too serious!! In the meanwhile, sit back and enjoy!

Hi Graham
That Jupiter you have aquired - is that the one with the off side front suspension all dismantled - the weight of the car on the front wheel just under the drivers seat? if it is I saw it about 15 years ago and had a good long chat with the owner - he was very anti selling it at the time - be good to see it on the road

The jupiter had the steering rack removed as it had ceased and the front wheels off the car.
However, the brakes were not ceased and everything was as it was left 42 years ago

The Pattern has been made and quantities agreed. Sorry I have been so slow but it will take them about 3 weeks to make them. We are a lot closer now than before so "keep the faith"
