Centenary Rally 2010 - other classic attendance

Post by Chris Spencer »

I am fairly new to the club having purchased my Jowett in many peices - it wll not be attending the rally due to this fact although myself and my wife shall be there - I would not want to detract from the vehicles that the club represents - however, as it would be impossible for us to attend in our Jowett I had given thought to attending in one of my other non Jowett classics - Would it be possible for the organising committee to consider putting a small display space aside for any members attending in a non Jowett classic vehicle ?? or is this a bridge too far ?? - if so I will just have to park in the conventional car park with all the modern rubbish and have done with it - is anyone else attending that can not get in their in Jowett mode but have access to something else classic that is up and running ?

Chris and others attending the Centenary Rally in a Modern car:
1. We will have pretty much sole use of the rally hotel over the weekend. It has car parking space approaching that of an airport, so I do not see there being a problem there, but we need to be aware of any special needs.
2. Cannon Hall: With your February Jowetteer you will receive the rally entry form. We have changed this a bit this year and it will give you opportunity to advise a modern car or tow car and we are currently planning what we do with these (we will have a plan once we know the numbers) Local Authority Car Park charges apply at Cannon Hall so you will need a rally pass to park without charge.
The topic is in consideration and our site manager has it as an action item!
We welcome every Jowett that can make it to the rally, driven, trailered, in several packing cases however you can get it there!

The request was not space for a 'modern' but a classic non-Jowett. I guess we could have some apartheid or segregation label such as 'Non-Jowetts' provided it does not allow Fords!

Not quite sure what you have got against 'Fords' but you go stright to the top my class - I have refused to ever purchase / hire etc any Ford or FMC related product (includes Mazda & Volvo of which they own the majority of) ever since I was stiched up by Ford - long story involving a £25k vehicle purchase and me taking them to court and loosing as I could not afford to fight them and their corperate solicititors - unfortunatly I was a very small fish in a very big tank - but hey that's there loss

Why Fords are not our favourite

Post by Alastair Gregg »

Corporate stories are never simple and to try to be too simplistic is asking for someone to argue with you. However I suspect Keith is taking the view that Fords bought out the bodywork company Briggs Motor Bodies, who made all the Javelin shells and most of the bodywork for the Bradfords .

Jowetts got behind on the quantities of bodies used due to poor gearboxes and crankshafts snapping. Unable to sort those problems out immediately Jowetts resorted to buying fields to store shells in. They also slowed, then stopped the supply after to alleviate their problems. Sadly the supply was never started again as Jowett was now in financial trouble. Ford needed more pressing facilities, Mr Briggs died and the company was looking for volume work. Ford then saw this, moved in and bought it. This undoubtedly had a large part to play in the downfall of Jowetts but was far from the sole source of its problems.

The dislike of the Ford Marque stems from this.
I too am of the same opinion and want nothing to do with Henry Fords methods of transport. Sadly my employer does not share this view and thus I have a Mundeno as a punishment.

Nope. Nothing to do with that. In some ways I quite admire Ford who have managed to keep a brand alive for so long. Much more than amorphous ones like GM and BMC and even the German ones.

It was just the thought of Jowetts, Anglias and Populars mixed together.

Suspecting is not really enough

Ah well, it was, as I said, a suspicion. :)

You can come to the rally anyway you like. As I said shortly you will have an opportunity to tell us - mind you I do stop short of providing a bicycle rack!

Not all foreign cars are bad there is not much wrong with Mercedes Benz and they did actually use von Eberhoff to design the chassis same as Jowett did see picture of 170va which has a nice big tubular chassis a la Jupiter
Rest of the car is not bad either but Jowett engine in 1953 was a lot better than the merc's and the suspension is better on the Jupiter but MB really caught up in 1954 with the Ponton and they never looked back from there unlike Jowett who diedImage
