Taper Wheel Bearings

Recently looked into changing over and got quite a shock on the price of the outer bearings. The bearings are Timken 1330/1351 and the cheapest quote was $600 to do both sides.

Has anyone done this lately?

I have asked our resident guru in all things Jowett to join the forum.
Brian has converted several Jupiters to tapered bearings and has an engineering drawing of thespacer which can be easily turned up for the job.
Be patient,its on the way.

I think I recall in the late 60's, that a regular contributor - Philip Dingle - made up some spacers at that time to suit Javelin front wheel bearing conversion to taper roller bearings.

If you read this Phil, would you care to comment?

Hi. Just had Bill Lock and Roger up here in Lancashire a couple of days ago, and discussion over lunch included bearings. From what Bill said, the price of a batch of taper bearings shouldn't be astronomical, if you "know where to go". Perhaps give him a call and have a chat. Tony.

No, it was not I who made a roller bearing adaptor kit, but John Blaze. I fact I still have his original drawing. At that time, he was using SKF K1986 and K1931 bearings along with a Payen C924 (C510) seal. His design required the bearing bore to be bored out slightly.

Well, it WAS a long time ago! Still, is there any mileage in publishing the drawing? My feeling is that the spacer was needed because the 'inner' rings of the two taper bearings would otherwise not be fixed in relation to each other on the stub axle. Adjustment would presumably be by means of the securing nut as usual.

The hub drawing in Pat's post looks excellent. It embraces everything in John Blaze's sketch, and more.

All that is needed now is for Pat, or someone, to list the bearing and grease seal part numbers (and/or dimensions) if different from those noted above, and the conversion should be relatively straight forward.

Well, I see we had a pretty good discussion. I called several bearing houses, all of which indicate that there is no longer any production of this 1330/1351 bearing and race.

The inner bearing is the 1986/1931 race and ball set, as mentioned above. It is the outer bearing that is no longer available in the US, or, more correctly, rather expensive to obtain.

I was hoping someone had done this recently and had another bearing number or an alternative size.

Thanks for all the information, but I regret to say that it was all printed in a Ted Miller Jowett Jive in the '90's, including the drawing. That is how I got started on this!
