To do or not to do? That is the question.

Post by Tony Fearn »

I'm restoring the front end of my 1934 Short saloon as it's around 30 years ago since she was last sorted out!!

Because of this, and due to the fact that I'll be re-spraying the front wings and the bonnet (fenders and hood), I will lose the sign-written "Mary Ellen" on the upper front bonnet sides.

Her name has been painted on the bonnet since named in the early 60's by my friend the Rev. Bob Jackson, who was curate of All Saints Church Clayton le Moors at the time. He had wanted to call her 'Tabetha' a name which apparently means -'full of wondrous works'!! We settled on 'Mary Ellen' fortunately.

Seeing her name so clearly on the car has been a source of amusement for numerous members of the public at many a car rally and in the wider world, so that's why I'm posting this question.

Should I have her name painted once again on the bonnet or is it a bit naff these days?

Do speak your mind. I'll not be offended (unless it's rude)

The poll's above I think.

OOPS - should be in Pre-war section. Sorry.

Tony, I think you should because she will always be Mary Ellen to all who know her - I still see many cars down this way, especially the smaller variety, with similar scripts on their bonnets. I certainly don't think it's 'naff'!

Its about as naff as guys naming $100,000 + hot rod.

Mention "mary Aleen, even people in NZ/Aussie know who what is being reffered to...

I would be having a chat to a sign writer....they should either
1/Reproduce it from a photo with hand script
2/ Or they can from a photo, make a sticker repoduction that can be applied after painting...maybe one for each side.

3/ you could take a photo, adjust the pic to alolow for curviture of the panel in photoshop or paint.net (a open source equilient of photoshop)
Buy some transfer printing paper, and print out, using a laser colour printer, and re apply yourself.

Please re paint the name. Not a question to be dallied with for more than a heartbeat.

The car is obviously world famous.

It was the first Jowett other than my own families I ever knew the name of.
Compliments of the Season,

Alastair Gregg
