Crankcase top face

I would like to properly clean up and 'face' the tops of the crankcase halves for obvious reasons re. mating with the heads etc.. But Iam rather wary of what's going to happen if I try to remove the studs, visions of stripped ali threads and so on come to mind. Any comments on the desirability/practicality/need and any tricks for removal (heating and cooling?), would be appreciated.
Also what's involved re the removal of the drilled oilway stud?

The removal of the studs requires a high degree of care. A good quality 10mm ( doubt if you will get a 3/8 in one now ) stud extractor, socket type, is essential. This lets you work near the head face of the stud you are removing rather than using the locknut method. I usually test each stud first as some remove without further work. Soak the stud / crankcase areas with plenty of WD40 or drop the cases into a bath of diesel ( if you have access ). Leave for a few days. Now this is the tricky bit. Wait till the wife goes out for a shopping trip, she will not return early , and fill the bath with hot water and with a rubber sheet or similar, drop the cases into the bath and let them soak for an hour or so topping up with boiling water. Have a small gas blowlamp handy, if required for the really awkward ones, ( ONLY use slight heat ) Proceed to remove studs. The rear stud going through the water inlet can be a pig but keep it well lubricated. I do not usually have a problem with the stud that feed the rockers with oil. DO NOT FORCE ANY OF THE STUDS IF THEY REFUSE TO MOVE. Spend rest of day cleaning the bath........

My admiration for Ruby has increased one-hundred fold!

Can't see Sue accepting such bathroom antics.

Mind you, at the hotel at Pitlochry in 2000, the hot bathwater was the colour of stale diesel - is that the norm for Scotland?
