Handbrake dropping off.

Post by Forumadmin »

The ratchet on the handbrake needed adjustment just before taking the Jup out for a 120 mile drive yesterday.

You just had to touch it and it would fly off. After 50 years I guess it has worn. I first tried the ratchet from the SC; but it was no better. Then the complete SC component, and was not happy with that either. So took the unit down to my workshop and did a bit of metal bashing to reduce gap between ratchet and pin housing so that there was no movement between them. The metal is so thin it had bent so that the pin (finger that engages with ratchet) was not in line with the ratchet gear. I hammered a filet in the plates on both sides, not only to strengthen them from bending but also to reduce the movement. I also filed the teeth to make them sharper.

Now is safe and does not drop out; although the pin is worn, so when I have time I will weld and grind it back to original size and shape. The pin had worn unevenly because of the movement.
