Thought it about time there was an inclusion in th Club Magazine from across the water in Jersey. It's a bit out od date but hope you can use it. I do have a photo of the car to go with it if you'd like to e-mail me. Cheers Jane (the Wife)
Saturday 7th June 2008 – Jersey, Channel Islands
Picture the scene: The day is bright and promises to be very sunny and after preparing the picnic, the wife, Jane, is waiting for hubby to get back from drinking coffee at the harbour with his mates – a regular daily occurrence. She is expecting to go to the 2008 Jersey Festival of Motoring in their usual vehicle, a 1960 Mercedes 220sb Fintail. Imagine her surprise when Martin started to dust off his 1952 Jowett Javelin. Apparently it was a spur of the moment decision as it has only been out a couple of times since 2005 clocking up a staggering 42 miles.
Martin and Jane first caught sight of this vehicle in a garage in 1992. It was surrounded by all manner of debris under a mound of carpets in an appalling derelict state. Martin started working on its full restoration in 1994 and 11 years later the finished product was featured in the local tabloid, the JEP.
At this her first ‘official’ show, word soon got around and the Javelin caused quite a stir, many remarking on the pristine condition of the vehicle, admiring the gleaming bodywork, appreciating the work carried out on the inside of the cab and looking at the photo albums documenting the restoration history. Young and old alike were getting down on their knees to get a glimpse of the underneath the vehicle that shone like a new pin (must take mirrors with us next time), marvelling at the engine bay with its authentic flat four engine.
It’s a testimony to Martins meticulous attention to detail, that he should receive praise so well earned after all of his hard work.
Towards the end of the show whilst making our way out of the park we decided join a queue of vintage cars in the arena, just for a laff mind, fully expecting to be turned back. Imagine our surprise when our ‘J’ number was taken and we were asked to proceed. Not knowing what we were getting into we trundled after the others… it turned out to be an agility course for car, driver and passenger.
