I have created two albums with the same pages in png and tif format.

http://www.jowett.net/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=8923
Please let me know which you rate as easier to use or better quality.
The same album in jpg format used 10 times the space!
http://www.jowett.net/gallery/main.php? ... &g2_page=2
These are in pdf format and seem to be much better quality. Although they are not from the same source. Need to have a definitive test to decide how to store for best quality and ease of use.
I have also noticed that you can get an access violation error which I think is caused when you try to download pictures too frequently. Closing the browser and retrying seems to cure this. This happens with Microsoft Internet Explorer and Google Chrome.
PNg or Tif format. Please let me have your comment.

Hello Keith.
I hope this is of some use to you in evaluating your trials.

No problems with link opening, using browser (iMac's Safari).
"MM-jav-early-56" opens first time ok and subsequent times, but text is barely readable on 24" LCD monitor (iMac)

"MM-jav-early-56" opens first time ok, but NOT subsequent times (leaving "violation" message). Text is barely readable. New files load alright . . . until you attempt to reload them.
Using Opera as the browser appears to make no difference to the above notes.

No problems with link opening. Browser is Safari.
Pdfs open ok 1st try. but not subsequent attempts to open the same file.
Images and text are extremely legible.
I believe I have found that if a second file is loaded, then closed, one can go back to the first and it will once again load . . . I'm not too sure that this always happens though!
Yes, closing the browser seems to enable the files to be loaded the second time (actually the first time on that session).
I hope all the above is reasonably clear!
We are really looking forward to Ruby and Drummond visiting us in a few days time . . .
Cheers, Leo

Thanks Leo.
I think the violation may be due to phpbb protecting itself from attack; but I have not found any proof of that.
When I can find time I will try to look at the best format to store black and white text in the Gallery. The last time I looked at it was 3 years ago and things may have changed. I think it all depends on what scanning and text enhancement capabilities the person who loads the document has on their computer. Plus the effort they take in getting the correct page size and appropriate file size for the detail needed to make everything legible. The aim should be to end up with files no larger than 200kB for a B/W page.
My scanner driver has background removal capability and tunes itself to enhance text. That feeding into Adobe Photoshop generates the quality you see in the pdf files of the Jowett Bulletins. Actually better than the original and less than 100kB.

A BW page scanned using grey scale, saved as jpg
cropped background, sized to 600 wide, save at 25 to 30% compression gives a size about 30 to 75kb and is quite ledgable.
Espec if pic is save to local machine
because the browsers usually resize pics to page anyway.
Hence why the norm for web sites to use jpg format.

File formats
I use a PC and Opera (supposedly the closest to the WWW Consortium standard).
I get the security violation as every body seems to. The PDF was best quality. The PNG opened the Tif did not. I could try in Mozilla or IE if you need to know.
I hope it helps
