The club Javelin midship cross member rubber support had broken. So a roadside repair was required as it was giving me a headache. The two halves of the split rubber sheet were turned around and refitted.

midship support repair

After a couple of failed attempts I finally got a solution to get me home. The turned around rubber block split so was first replaced with some fencing wire that we obtained from the farm where we stopped. This did not support the cross member well but it got us to the motel where I removed the wire and replaced the rubber blocks by sections of tow strap. A soldering iron was purchased to make the eight holes in the nylon strap. This held the support and the worn rubber bush around the bearing was filled with silicone. However after a short test drive the bush fell out so off to the hardware store to purchase wire which was used to hold it in place. The tow straps were also stiffened with wire. We then changed our plans to drive around the east cape to Te Arowoa and instead backtracked from Gisborne to Napier and up to Taupo. To reduce movement the cross member was held by some wire onto the brake cable support.

The pictures were taken back in Auckland where I was surprised to find all the wire was still in place. Good for another 70 years??
