Gearbox rebuild

Post by Tonyb57 »

Hi all I have just rebuilt my javelin box and noticed significant differences between a 3000 and a 6000 numbered box, the early box had a different main shaft and lock pin and 1st sliding gear, laygear had 34 teeth and 4th sliding gear was a different shape, now I've used the later box main shaft as the clutch spigot had worn away the end, changed the layshaft pin and layshaft, and used the spigot shaft to match the laygear, the spacing washers are thin compared to the fatter and smaller ones on the earlier box, I also changed the ball bearings in the 1st 2nd sliding gear as I found some chewed, which probably didn't help gear selection, the question I'm asking, the 1st gear sliding cog goes on the main shaft first and I'm unsure if I have put it on correctly, when replacing the ball and springs can the gear go either way, I know the groove with the locking pin has to align with the groove on the main shaft, but I'm wondering if I have put it on upside down, can anyone elaborate
