1952 Rear axle

Post by Keith Clements »

This is with the March 1953 amendment to the May 1952 parts book. No changes to the rear axle though.

Is the 54282 = 2HA-019 actually different to the HA-019-1?

Modern replacement for the leather seal is SKF 15788. Leather will be NOS, meaning 60 years of air exposure and natural decay.

Good Morning,

In my experience the oil seal concern is simple. Forget the original leather oil seals, age will mean oil leaks rather quickly. Also forget the Jowett, Morgan and Jaguar part numbers!

The best option is to carefully remove the original seal, measure the diameter (54284 companion flange HA-083-1) that the seal lip runs on and the diameter where the seal fits into the axle housing. Then measure the depth of the bore in the housing. Take these dimensions to a ball/roller bearing stockist – here in Melbourne we have a company called Consolidated Bearing Company (C.B.C.) who stock a vast range of seals. Ask the supplier for a double lip seal to match your dimensions. Modern seals have a rubber coating on the casing to prevent oil leakage in that area.

I do not know the actual dimensional differences between the early and later rear axles.

However, Jupiter E0/SA/42R did have a later rear axle fitted when it was converted to full hydraulic brake system. I thought it had been converted at the works prior to being sold in 1953 – not so it turned out, the master cylinder had different internal dimensions!

The rear axle exhibited a large amount of backlash which turned out to be a worn differential case (54257 Javelin Part No.) where the differential pinion mate shaft (54263) fits. The pinion to crown wheel mesh was good. I opted to have a Ford Falcon pickup rear axle centre assembly (Borg Warner) fitted between the original Salisbury hubs. That has worked well, with a 4·11:1 diff ratio.

All part numbers from the May, 1952 Spare Parts Catalogue.

All the best,

Mike A.

Back again!

Should mention that New Holland hay baler hypoid gear boxes used double lip pinion shaft oil seals with great success - so, do not worry about a modern seal's durability in this application.

Hi Keith and all, It is mid week for me so I don't have time to do much digging.

I don't have the new pinion seal part number at my fingertips for the early short nose differential.
Bill Lock had adaptors made up so a fairly ordinary seal would fit into an adaptor collar and that looked pretty good.

Consolidated Bearings Company in Adelaide used to hunt them down for me but that has stopped with the loss of branches and experienced sales staff.

I know the Dana 20 Diff centre is virtually the same as a Salisbury 3HA but don't no if these included the short nose versions with the smaller pinion seal.

Can continue to search through my notes on the weekend.
Kind regards
Tim

Two responses by phone from Peter Pfister whose mechanic found a metric seal that fitted. Successful because his early Jav has just been to Wales from Switzerland and back. Unfortunately no details available from his mechanic on what was fitted. But he just took the dimensions to his seal supplier in Gallen.

And by Whatsapp from Neil Moore who helps run the NZ spares team who have in stock the Bill Lock mod to hold a modern seal. Neil is with Bill Lock who has these currently in stock in Surbiton so, Michael, I suggest you contact him.

Thanks for all your responses - very helpful and appreciated. I've located a modern equivalent seal and ring gasket via Coventry Auto Components (suggested by Keith Clements). They were helpful although not particularly familiar with 3HA axles. However further research led me to conclude that the 3HA pinion oil seal part number is the same as Salisbury 2HA and 4HA axles. I also checked that they accept returns if I'm wrong! I'll let you know once the seal arrives and when I get to the job - hopefully this weekend. Thanks for the alternative solutions that I will definitely pursue if Plan A doesn't work out. Watch this space. Regards and thanks again, Michael
