Front Barkes

Post by SteveWood »

Having recently tried to adjust my front brakes I have found that the adjusters dont seem to be having any effect at all? The cars been stood a while and the front brakes are binding a little so I know I'll need to take them apart to inspect/replace any parts that are needed. Are the front cylinders a jowett special or are they generic with any other cars (like the back ones)?

Thanks for any advice.

PS brilliant stand at the NEC today.

Steve,

The front brake set up on your Javelin is a generic Girling twin leading shoe. Complete replacement cylinders or just rubber seals are commonly available. There are two snail adjusters. The most likely cause of trouble, assuming the car has not been used much, is the pistons sticking in their bores. In this case the shoes will stay out even though you back off the adjuster.

Hi Steve,

If you find the existing cylinders are either leaking or seized, I would recommend replacement rather than fitting new rubbers. Also, some of the NOS items that are available may just be too old and the rubbers might have perished in storage?

Rather than sourcing them from eBay, I would recommend using JCS, as their stock is probably turning over fairly frequently? I have heard reports that some of the cheapo wheel cylinders on sale maybe cheaper, but unfortunately of low quality.

Also, I have experienced partially blocked flexible rubber hoses, that cause the symptoms of brakes binding. While changing the wheel cylinders, now might be the time to change those as well? Might make a suitable, if unusual, Christmas present?

All the best,

David
