LHD Jupiter on US ebay

Post by Srenner »

This is the late Rev. Hall's car I restored in 2014-15. It was mentioned here a few months ago when the dealer had it listed on Craigslist for US$90k. It does not seem to be getting much attention and could end up being a massive bargain. Less than 300 miles on the clock as it was a trailer queen hauled to shows. Missing the hood as he thought he would get it done in rural Idaho for less than the quotes I had in hand.

Your interest in the forum: I now own Javelin E0 10010 (formerly Robin Fairservice's car in British Columbia). I spent some time figuring out a terrible racket in the engine and it will be used in the summers, alongside my collection of British obscurities (well, they are obscure here in N America).

I'll be looking for technical help, spares, and the sort.

Oops, on BaT, not eBay. Will be interesting to see what it fetches. I would quite like to have a Jupiter to go with my Javelin, which will hopefully be back on the road soon, just in time to go in the barn for winter.

Is the dashboard properly refinished? The grain looks off to me in the photos, almost like it was fake wood grain on a cheap desk...

Yes, the grain on the dash should be vertical as seen in this example. The wood was American oak, not as heavily figured as the original, but book-matched per original. The stain was chosen by the wood worker and finished to a high standard, I think it looks better in person when seen with the upholstery, The leather is Jaguar Palomino IIRC.

I thought there might be comments on the hand-painted steering wheel and hub!

Hi All,

I agree it's a very nice looking car, although I am not a Jupiter owner and not therefore qualified to comment on the dash or steering wheel!

However, have you played the videos that accompany the advertisement? There is quite a lot of what sounds like bearing rattle on initial start up and then some quite alarming rumbles and thumping when the car is driven. Oil pressure looks ok though? However, to me, that would raise doubts? Maybe I am being too cautious, having only had personal experience of smooth ( and sophisticated? ) Javelins, with almost the same engine? The driving video shows that the exhaust is, to me, much more noisy and rough, compared to that in a Javelin.

All the best,

David

David,

It would merit an inspection in person, as much of what you’re describing could just be the nature of microphone used to record.

Don’t forget that the lack of a roof and windows would also increase noise levels!

It looks to be a lovely car, previously advetised for $92k, IIRC. Seller made a comment that he thinks he’ll get north of $70k in a live auction, and maybe he’s right, but $33k RNM at BaT has me guessing he’s wrong about that.

I'm surprised at the quote above.
I've always found my 'Flying Fox', albeit a pre-war car, to be less noisy when the top's down, although that's when it's tootling along.
Tony.

Jupiters will have more air intake noise than Javs because of the lack of air box. They will probably have a lot more exhaust noise and bark due to different silencing. They will also transmit a lot more engine noise due to lack of sound insulation between ears and engine. But it is a sports car.

This auction ended last time at $33,333 USD with the reserve not met. It’s back on BaT, and I suppose we will see if the seller’s reserve is more realistic.
