WANTED - Industrial / stationary engine in order to progress a very interesting project - we have been approached by the 'Steeple Grange Light Railway' (SGLR) (via JCC member John Cash) whom operate a 18'' gauge light railway that specialises in industrial engines - such engines, rolling stock and track would have been used in operations such as mines, tunnelling, quarries, reservoirs etc. A opportunity has arisen for SGLR to re-engine one their locomotives and a Jowett industrial would do the job - this would be a unique opportunity for the club to further the Jowett marque. So to cut to the chase do you have or do you know of a Jowett industrial engine that is doing nothing other than gathering dust - if so would you like to get in touch - all my contact details are on the inside front page of the Jowetteer - more information on SGLR is available on the following website: http://www.steeplegrange.co.uk/
Many thanks
Chris

Re: Industrial / stationary engine wanted
G'dday Chris,
Just looked at this topic out of interest. Back in 1966, in a scrap yard in Stone, Staffordshire, run by a fellow called Fred, there was a stack of the Jowett ex-WD engines. They were stacked in frames three or four wide and about six high, the stack was lengthy. The engines had pumps or generators attached - all were new and unused, complete with tool satchels.
We were there to buy a quantity of ex-WD lorry hood bows for canvas tray covers that we used for making field gates in a friend's workshop. The frames were also new.
At the time I mentioned the stack of Jowett engines at a Midland Section meeting, but no one was interested.
All memories now!
Regards,
Mike A.

Re: Industrial / stationary engine wanted
Hi, Also out of interest, I can recall visiting Charlie Dodd's scrapyard in Dartford, Kent in the early 1970's. This was a mecca for Jowett spares. Charlie's yard was in a valley and scattered alongside the track to the bottom of the valley you passed new Jupiter chassis frames. Arriving at the bottom of the valley, there were two Nissan huts, with the ends facing each other. In this gap there was a big pile of Jowett stationary engines, all heaped on top of each other. I purchased one for £10, as I was keen to build a Jowett-engined welding set. I already had an ex-aircraft DC generator, giving lots of 28v, but unfortunately, that project never got completed, as the arrival of children somehow became more important!
The Nissan huts were not in the best condition, and once inside one of them you could see that Charlie had built a supporting pillar of boxes of new boxed Javelin piston sets stacked on top of each other from the floor to the ceiling. I have no idea how Charlie managed to amass such a trove of Jowett spares, but the huts were stacked with all kinds of Jowett parts. You name it, Charlie had it in spades!
At the rim of the valley, there was a workshop and I can remember being curious, watching mechanics doing 'cut and shut' welding work on Mini's. You took a crashed Mini with front end damage and stuck the good rear end onto another that had a good front end! Happy days!
Keep safe and enjoy the coming Summer!
All the best,
David

Re: Industrial / stationary engine wanted
I have most of one and a number of extra bits.
See:- viewtopic.php?t=5735
Come to Clayton le Moors in Lancashire if you would like the whole shebang.
It is now at £0 i.e.free on collection to a Jowett Car Club member.
Bring a mate as I can't lift heavy items these days.
The radiator alone is worth something as scrap!
Tony.
