Various Jowetts for sale in South Africa.

In 2019 I got a permanent contract in Saudi Arabia and on the strength of that went ahead to purchase a collection of Jowetts from Peter Swan in South Africa.

I was particularly interested in the Jupiter which is in a rebuilt, rolling chassis condition. Although all the parts were supposed to be there I am missing the headlamps and dashboard c/w instruments and engine. Unfortunately, Peter has passed on and I have no way of finding out if the parts are still around.

The contract was curtailed at the 6 month point and I moved to Germany where I have been financing the work back in South Africa, to get the first of two Javellins up, running and sold in order to finance the rebuild of the Jupiter.

Unfortunately, I left them in the care of an old, very skilled restorer but with covid the cars have become a millstone around my neck and I need to get rid of them! I have the following:

1948 Javellin Chassis Number 282 (believed to be the oldest surviving example) cream untested but supposed running.

1952 Javellin Chassis Number Javellin Chassis Number 21434 - green running but needs work

Year (?) Javellin Chassis Number 22217D Blue/green for rebuild

Year (?) Javellin Chassis Blue/green for rebuild/spares.

RHD MK1A Jupiter Chassis Number E4/SC/1011R to be restored

Can you find out if there is any interest in these cars? Preferably to be sold as a job lot including various other bits and pieces including 8 new tires.

Ian - Sadly and from experience I doubt that they will be much interest in the collection as a whole - the only way I can see them being purchased as a collection is quite probably for a low valuation by a dealer whom would then split the collection and offer them individually back to the market - I have always encountered difficulty in finding homes / purchasers for Javelin projects and at times have had to offer them on a minimal or no cost basis in order to secure a new home for them - Fact is they are a complex & expensive car to restore and you could well expend twice the cost of the end value of the car in restoration costs alone - I fully accept that's not why most of us choose restore cars in the first place - The Jupiter can be a valuable car if its restored correctly but again this is a very expensive process - Given that the cars are in South Africa, the cost of collecting everything together, shipping, insurance & import duties its going to be very difficult to expect to complete a sale outside of the country where they are currently situated. Priced correctly I could probably find a European client sale for the Jupiter but its important to remain realistic about the sale price whilst taking into account the consolidation & logistical costs. Your Javelin chassis number 282 is certainly one the of the oldest surviving models but not the oldest as chassis number 13 survives in the UK and is currently being restored.
