Hi,
Our webmaster has suggested that, during the dark days of the latest Covid-19 lock down, we might like to research for any references to our Jowett's that might be held withing the electronic records of the Club? I know that my Javelin was owned previously by Ken Lees, a past Competitions Secretary, so there might be references ( or even photos? ) to my vehicle in the records?
I have attempted this by inserting the registration number of my Javelin in the various search boxes on the site, but have been given the following message :-
The following words in your search query were ignored because they are too common words: DCB 246.
You must specify at least one word to search for. Each word must consist of at least 4 characters and must not contain more than 84 characters excluding wildcards.
Obviously I am doing something wrong, but would appreciate any guidance?
Many thanks,
David

Re: Searching the records
So how was this done?
Either start a session with member services and click on menu item 'Search Archive' or login to JowettTalk and go to the Library Discussion forum, look at the Club Magazines INDEX topic and click on the link. Then from the menu choose Search Archive.
Notice the use of quotes and plus sign for the search term.
I will be putting some help tutorials together but I am also learning as well as developing a Semantic Search system which is very powerful.
The messages David received were from the JowettTalk Database search system which has the limitations of 3 characters minimum, as most search systems have. That search does not search the Items in the library, notably the magazines but the Archive Search does. Changing the search without the space finds these in JT for David's car. There are no finds for the phrase "DCB 246". Note the quotes signify to search for the two 'words' together.
However, the database indexing system ignores three character words. So it does not find this DCB 246 but does this DCB1 246A. It will also ignore common words so this that would not be found.
This system is in its infancy and will be further integrated into JowettTalk. The Semantic Search may even be able to combine searching all resources at once i.e. the Archive, JowettTalk and all the Jowett websites. The semantic search system attempts to classify into sets like people or locations. But I have yet to figure out how to program it to recognise car numbers on Jowetts. I have tested semantic search already on the Archive but the Archive is not included in the index currently as I have just rebuilt the system so that it can sit on the same server as the Search Archive system. The Archive is an extract from JowettTalk of the documents such as pdfs and Word Docs. These have all been processed after extraction to make them consistent and searchable. They are also watermarked. I am still not happy with the ease of locating the search term in the documents as you may have to flip through all the pages in the viewer to see what the system has found. I can make this better by splitting the documents into pages, but then viewing sequential pages becomes an issue. A workaround is to download the document and use Acrobat viewer to find the search term.
I will get there eventually. But I have had to learn a few different languages to get this far.
If you want to experiment you could try reading this

or this
https://lucene.apache.org/solr/guide/8_ ... ery-parser or perhaps there are other tutorials more suitable for the lay person that you can find on Google.

Re: Searching the records
Hi Keith,
Thanks for this. I will experiment when lock down bites in and I have more time. Just at present trying to get things done before the midnight curfew! I suspect we shall be in for the long haul and Christmas will be very different this year!
Many thanks,
David

Re: Searching the records
I saw you had accessed...I have a few other things to do in the next couple of months but will get back to improving the search system.
