Introduction
Here is some more information for your Australian Register file.
First is a supplement page to add to the 1992 Register which lists some variations and additions. Many thanks to those
members who have forwarded this updated information; very much appreciated and helps to keep our cars’ histories
accurate.
Also enclosed for your interest and records is a list of the Serial Numbers of all Javelins exported by Jowett Cars Ltd. to
Australia. Australia was Jowetts largest export market — a total of 2,614 cars came here, over 10% of manufacture.
This was made up of 2,599 cars to mainland States and 155 to Tasmania. The remaining 60 were ‘Knock-Down’ cars
which were assembled in Melbourne through Jowett’s Australian company, Jowett Cars Pty. Ltd. in conjunction with
Martin & King Pty. Ltd. These Javelins have the letters ‘JKD’ before their serial number and their original engine numbers
were simply prefixed PE, e.g., E3 PE JKD 116 with Engine No. PE 116.
As astute, highly observant Jowetteers, you will have noticed that the following numbers appear in our Australian
Register but not in the export list:
2420, 6361, 7233, 8604, 10624, 11701, 11995, 12019, 13036, 15993, 18191, 18652, 19685, 20118, 24211.
If one of these Javelins is yours, could you perhaps double check the identification plate and let me know if the Register
number is indeed correct.
I believe that this is the first time these export figures have been available in Australia and we are very grateful ta Noel
Stokoe, Press Officer and Librarian of the Jowett Car Club, UK, for the research and compiling of these facts, Noel has
spent a large portion of the past year on the project and, in conjunction with another JCC member Eden Lindsay from
Northern Ireland has been computer listing all the Javelins known from club records since 1961, including a listing for
those definitely known to have been scrapped. Noel has finished the NZ list too and is currently working on Sweden, S.
America and Africa. At least the list must be getting smaller, Noel, although not necessarily easier!
If all this is not enough, Noel is compiling a Jowett pictorial library and would greatly appreciate any photos of Australian
Javelins and Jupiters. If you can help Noel in this way – even if you could supply negatives that he could borrow – his

Note: This listing is as accurate as possible, there were numerous original typing corrections that were difficult
to interpret. The document used for this restoration appears to be Gestetner printed.
The document was compiled by Tony George in 1992. It has been ‘restored’ for safe keeping. As a result of my
filing system, the introduction was filed separately from the list of Javelin Serial Numbers.
It is understood that a number of Javelins were privately imported by Australian residents visiting Britain, who
purchased a new car, toured Britain and, sometimes continental Europe, before shipping the car to Australia.
This avoided British purchase tax and (probably) Australian taxes as well.

Hullo Fellow Jowetteers,

Thanks Mike for that painstaking restoration of Australian Javelin Chassis Numbers. Yes, the original was done on an old Gestetner, and the ink supply to those typed stencils was variable. So copies could be getting a bit faint after 28 years! Also, my typewriter at that time was a bit ancient too; well done for sorting it all out.

The main research was done by Noel Stokoe and Eden Lindsay; I added the Australian news when re-typing for our Register.

In the interim, Tim Kelly has found D8 PA 177 in South Australia and interestingly this does not appear on the list. A private import maybe? According to my revised list, there are just four left of the 159 D8 cars imported to Australia. Tim’s is the earliest, followed by 275 belonging to John Davis of NSW and my 573. In August 2019, 414 was auctioned in Victoria, as reported by Andrew Henshall, but found no buyer. I have heard no news of this Javelin since. (In fact the last UK Register I saw, there were only three shown - 13, 61 and 230)

Hi Mike,

I spotted your list of Javelins registered in Oz that were not on my lists, Tony also mentioned an early example D8/PA/177. I was expecting that when I revisited these numbers they would be ones I missed when I made the lists, as I literally had dozens of A4 lined sheets filled with hand-written numbers. This was partially true, as you will see, but others have interesting stories to tell as they must have come to Oz at a later date: -

Who was Lady Sowcher?

I have the engine EO PB 10624 but not the car.

My dad bought the engine in the early 1970s from a wrecker for $4 so I doubt that the car survives. When I first started to work on Jowetts, Dad gave be D9 PA 2728 missing its engine. 10624 was the first Jowett engine I ever tackled to fit to 2728. It had done a fair bit of work and had knurl sized pistons. I got it going but the oil pressure was not great and the main bearings rumbled (they still do! but not as badly) Eventually I fitted new pistons and a ground crankshaft and it has carried us many places over the years including interstate trips.

Also missing from the list above is E2 PE JKD 122 which is in the shed and I hope that I can get to this one year soon. At least JKD 111 is nearly finished.

Worth noting that 8604 would have been sold by Jowett racer and Monte Carlo class winner, Bill Robinson, who owned Millbrow Garage.
