- Your interest in the forum: I have a life-long interest in old cars and have recently felt a need for a small pre-war vehicle and Jowett sprang to mind. My only other pre-war car was a 1939 Daimler E20 with a Charlesworth body. I currently have a 1968 Morris van and a 1966 Corvette Stingray. I like the Jowett engine designs and that they were from Bradford.

Anyone know this car?
I'm thinking about a prewar tourer, preferably a four seater, and this is up at Mathewsons soon

I seem to recall this being advertised fairly recently.
Any thoughts or is there anyone else out there thinking of selling something interesting and usable? Feel free to pm if you prefer.
Thanks.

Re: Anyone know this car?
I don't know of that particular car - I could be wrong but I don't think the body is original - certainty not the rear section and if it is original then its fairly unique - don't let that put you off - its pretty well executed and presents smartly - they are immense fun and fully backed by a great owners club with its own parts department - plenty of technical knowledge & help alongside a very friendly club scene - very capable cars too and unique in a lot of engineering respects - this car was advertised on the website 'Car & Classic' recently with a price of £8,500 - that's a very fair price (I'm a committee member of the club & also a member of the clubs vehicle valuation panel) - that should give you some idea of the likely reserve price that the vendor has placed on the vehicle and I would advise that if you can secure it for somewhere in that price region that you will doing quite well - Matthewsons sold a vintage Jowett short 2 last month also in good order which achieved £11k + Should you require any further advice / help / assistance please do not hesitate to PM me - Chris

Thanks Chris. It is the car I recall then as that price stuck in my mind. A pity I wasn't more proactive at the time!

Re: Anyone know this car?
Now listed with guide price of £6,950 - £7,950 - I would therefore predict a reserve price in the region of £7,500 which would appear to be fair / sensible money for what it is

Re: Anyone know this car?
I may well go and have a look this week. I wouldn't expect it to go for much more, the market for pre-war cars is now very slow as the enthusiasts die off sadly.
I saw an interesting article the other day regarding the high-end collectors market. The top 100 car collectors in the world are nearly all over 70 and own nearly 4000 cars between them, all 'worth' six and seven figures. In the next 10 to 15 years it's likely these will all come on to the market, it'll be interesting to see if the next generation venerates these cars in the same way.

Re: Anyone know this car?
It is likely that some will form a museum trust for their collection so that we can all appreciate them. But it is likely that not only pre-war cars but all petrol cars will be off the road in 20 years. So time to enjoy them while you can. Just enjoyed my V12 Aston on some country lanes. The only investment potential in that car is the number of smiles per mile, which not many modern cars can bring.

Hi ?Nick.
I have never seen this vintage model before.
It looks fabulous on the photos.
I think it must be a 'special', but don't let that put you off.
Just be careful what you pay for it.
The estimate seems reasonable.
Tony.

Re: Anyone know this car?
Hi Tony,
Yes it looks like the dickey cover has been removed, the tub altered and a door added. I think it looks slightly awkward now but still a nice car. I do prefer cars in a more original, used or oily rag condition but at nearly 100 years old that's not easy to find and I'd prefer a proper four seat tourer really.
It was up for sale for ages on carandclassic so it hasn't exactly flown off the shelf. Given that now I can't drive it or quiz the owner I'd expect to pay less but it'll only need two people to want it to sell well. I wish I'd gone to see it when it was up for sale but I had a health scare which thankfully turned out to be a false alarm but at the time another old car wasn't high on my list of priorities!
I'll see. I'm still in two minds.
Nick

Re: Anyone know this car?
It would be nice to see it with the hood down. I wonder how far the folded hood comes back over the rear seats? On our Long Two, it pretty much covers the panel between the front seats and the Dicky, but this does look to have lost that panel. I wonder if it might be a bit awkward to use the rear seats with the hood over your knees?

Looks like this car may have started life as a Long Four, but has been converted into a 2 seater, not sure why!

I think I'll leave this one. Had it still been with the vendor so I could have had a ride or a drive of it and a leisurely inspection then maybe, if the price was right. I'm in no hurry, something will turn up one day, hopefully fairly locally.

Re: Anyone know this car?
Ironic really, it was up for offers around £8500 on carandclassic so it probably could have been bought for nearer £8000 and with the benefit of a thorough inspection, test drive and quizzing the owner. Funny old world. Hopefully it's a private buyer not a dealer.
