Horn Wiring

The horn wiring was disconnected from the steering wheel centre in the 70's When a sports wheel was added. I am replacing this and wish to replace the horn push. There is a wire/wires I have found on removing the boss. Where do they emerge at bottom of steering column and should or is there a slip ring for electrical contact any where? Tony Gunton KAS147

Hi Tony,
There is a slip ring approx 14 inches down the column from the Steering Wheel. There should be a spring clip around the column with a bakelite item on top which the wire should be connected too. They tend to give issues as to shorting out when the wheel is turned hard which sounds the horn when you least want it. I would not be surprised if it has been removed at some point.

The horn going off at full lock seems to be a common problem I replaced the felt bush at the top of the column with a nylon one and its been O.K. since.

The other problem that occurs is the copper ring that makes the connection on the underside of the horn button becomes loose and drops on to the connections and sounds the horn for you! I think the copper ring may have been a tight fit in the underside of the horn button but over time become loose, over come by gluing the ring to the button.

I got mine working by having Kip Motors in Dallas Texas manufacture a horn slip ring for me, from scratch.
