eBay Bradford spares

An interesting mixture, at not much money at the moment:-

To put it into context, I recently paid £119 for a single, new Pre-war exhaust silencer.

I've had a few pre war bits from this guy, including new old stock oil pump and a 4 speed gear box and he's a nice guy to deal with. I think he owns a Bradford CC but is having a comprehensive clear out of spares for cars he doesn't own any more.

As you know Tony, my own much derided silencer is an official JCS issue, so I refuse to change it on a point of principle! That said, I have used ear plugs on longer journeys on account of it playing havoc with my tinnitus.

Hi Barry.
Perhaps the following will be of help (NOT).
Many years ago, my son Richard and his friend James Rodgers, (one of the sons to the famous father Peter!), both in their early teens, decided to play a trick on Keith Winteringham, a lovely man and a long time Jowetteer.
They had somehow acquired an exhaust whistle, and secreted it in the exhaust pipe of his Javelin at one of the shows we used to go to.
It took quite some time for the helpful club members to diagnose the 'funny sound' which wasn't there when Keith had arrived on the field.
Of course you wouldn't be able to hear such a thing over the Spitfire Merlin exhaust from your car.
Tony.

I'm fascinated to know how you'd "somehow acquired an exhaust whistle"?

My silencer was one of a couple apparently made by a local engineering firm for JCS to test before a batch was ordered. Ian Priestly offered it to me for a tenner to go with the new Y pipe I'd ordered when I was originally trying to get the car back on the road. He told me a couple of members had tried them, but they'd been returned as "a little bit loud for a saloon car" but he though it "would suit the character of the Long Two perfectly".

I'd started the car on open pipes to make sure it was going to run, then fitted the exhaust when it arrived. I was surprised when I fired it up to find it actually seemed louder! I never met Ian, but have happy memories of the time I spent chatting on the phone with him getting good advice and help. Every time I accelerate up a hill or feel the pain in my left ear as the exhaust bounces off a wall, I imagine the smile on his face as he packed it up to send it to me and it somehow feels wrong to change it. It's stainless steel, so there's no hope of corrosion solving the problem and it would probably upset the carburation anyway.

I also remember asking Ian what was the best way to tell the difference between a Short or Long Two before I saw the car, as there was some confusion as to exactly what it was on the register. He advised me "when you get there, climb in the dicky seat. If you can, it's a Long Two"
