Three Javelins and spares

I sadly don't have room for one Javelin, but this looks spectacular!

I have seen all these in the flesh about 3 years ago - none of the cars are complete / untouched and parts have been stripped from them - all of them would take a substantial amount of rebuilding / restoration - there is a mountain of spares that goes with them but the parts off the cars have all got mixed up with everything else - there are far better / complete Javelins in the market should anyone want a project - unfortunately all 3 cars in this collection require so much work or are in such a poor condition that they are probably better viewed has a source of parts rather than potential to rebuild / restore them

Very interesting that one of them has a sunroof. I thought FFR900 (that Noel Stokoe now owns, and that I was given by Piya Gunaratne when a teenager) was the only one. When we rebuilt it, there were certainly better Javelins about, but it seemed a shame to scrap such a rare bird.

It would be a loss if this one was just used for spares.

The one with the sunroof is nothing special its non original & something that someone has bodged on to the roof - its so bad that whoever did it was probably blindfolded at the time - you would be very, very lucky to build one good car out the 3 that are there and you would need very deep pockets / blank cheque book to do so - yes its a shame but its also a stark reality

For clarity the one with the sunroof is NOT one of the 2 original Javelins that left the factory with glazed sections to the front of the roofs - I believe that both of these cars survive but one belongs to a non club member and is in a poor state of repair

It is hard to tell the quality of the installation from the pictures. Noel's car has a metal sunroof by Pytchley Weathershields, which according to Piya was specified by a Blackpool doctor from the Jowett factory. Piya bought it from the original owner in about 1960 I think.

Hi John,
My car, FFR900 was delivered to the Jowett agents Imperial Garages Ltd. Blackpool, and was first registered for the
road on 6th May 1952, the car was Athena Grey with Red leather trim. It was used as a demonstrator car until it
was sold to its first owner, James Booth of 20 Mere Road, Blackpool who took delivery of the car on 11th July 1952.
He was a dentist in the town, and up until that time he had always run convertible cars, so he said he would buy
the car if a sunshine roof was fitted. According to Piya Gunaratne, this had been done by Jowett Cars themselves,
but it may have been done locally by Imperial Garages, Bradford.
Very best wishes,
Noel

Hi All,

I think this horde maybe (?) the collection that I viewed back in Bath several years ago? They had been imported from Sweden by a trader who used to often visit Sweden. His regular trips involved buying-up used mini coaches that had facilities for disabled access. He would drive these coaches back to the UK, via the ferry, and before making the journey home, he would fill them to the brim with second-hand wood-burning stoves, like the Jotel brand? On arrival back in the UK, he would sell the fires locally and would also prepare the coaches for sale. However, he reported that he had found that the best market for the coaches was in West Africa!

It was on one of these trips to Scandinavia that he stumbled across this collection of Javelins and literally a mountain of spares. He decided to ship them back to the UK on one of his regular runs. I often wondered what happened to them? If it is the same shipment, I had noticed that it contained at least six drivers door handles, absolutely brand new with the keys, in their original tissue paper wrapping! He was sadly not prepared to split the collection at that time. However, I see that the latest offer is in the region of £500 for the lot? How about JCS making a bid?

All the best,

David

David - I was informed by the current vendor that all 3 cars were sourced separately and therefore is not the collection that you refer to - however the Swedish left hand drive car may well have come from the trader in Bath that you refer to - JCS are aware of the collection however not all that glitters is gold - the stash largely consists of panels - doors / boots / bonnets & grilles all already stocked in large multiples at JCS and are very, very slow moving stock - other than that 3 seized engines and what's left of the drivetrain parts - all of which have been previously very poorly stored - then throw in the logistics of getting this lot which includes 3 part cars / bodyshells from North London to Bradford and having done that JCS have absolutely no where to store them - I don't think that its a headache that the volunteers at JCS need - I don't want to sound dismissive either having personally recovered 3 large stashes of parts for JCS in the last 5 years - I've lost count of the number of complete cars that I have recovered / saved / found homes for / donated - it's by no stretch of the imagination a easy undertaking

Hi Chris,

Yes, I completely understand the logistical problems of transporting slow-moving spares. I can recall the time when JCS decided that they were not interested in S/H spares and loads were destined for the scrapper. In Severnside, we had a different view and, responding to the challenge, several large trailer loads were collected from Yorkshire and brought south. Ideas changed with time, and we then set about returning it all north, with the help of JCS, who had changed their mind under new leadership and larger premises. It all took a lot of effort!

Not sure about other marques, but Jowett enthusiasts seem to be natural horders? The 'might come in handy one day' philosophy must run in the genes?

All the best,

David

There have been some bids so can we assume they are 'saved'?

Whom knows at that price they will be probably picked up by a trader who will either attempt to big them up into something & sell them at over inflated prices or strip the lot for spares and tout them again at over inflated prices via the electronic sales / auction sites
