Can any give me the correct size and technical specification for the Universal Joint Part number 50916,and is this available through the club spares? It is common to the Jupiter as well as Javelin. I have identified two UK based suppliers of layrubs'. Regards,
Tony Gunton

Re: Layrub Part 50916
Hi Tony,
Yes, I see that JCS do supply Layrub couplings part no. 50916. See the April 2019 Jowetteer, p26. But they are £160! You may have to check whether the prices you have been quoted directly from Howden's is +VAT or whether this is included? I think the JCS price is plus VAT, but why not check tomorrow evening when JCS are open?
I know Howden's did also supply spare bobbins, so that you can rebuild your own Layrubs, but adding up the price of four bobbins came to nearly the same as a new coupling, and saved the hassle of rebuilding the coupling. I assume that is why JCS dropped the rebuild route and now just supply fresh couplings, without any need for an exchange part?
Another avenue you might like to investigate is to ask Bill Lock whether he does a Hardy Spicer type replacement for the whole shaft? I think I heard a suggestion that he has developed this alternative. As you will realise, the Jupiter is half way there already? Apparently, the rear Layrub on the Javelin runs beyond it's design limits anyway, based on the angles it has to work through. Jowett's were a bit naughty here!
Hope this helps?

Re: Layrub Part 50916
I'm not going to hold back on this one and I am fully aware that I'm not only member of this club that has the same mindset - so firstly JCS is not vat registered and any prices that they quote will be inclusive of any vat that they had to pay on purchasing the product from an external supplier - the price that you were quoted from Howdens is plus vat and yes you might just save a few quid
You quote the £160 with an exclamation mark - you obviously think that its very expensive - JCS operate on behalf of the club members in order to ensure Jowett's of all models are kept where they belong 'On The Road' - they make very small margins on the supply of parts and any year end surplus (historically single figure low thousands is ploughed straight back in the procurement & expansion of the clubs spares scheme)
A small percentage of your JCC membership fee is contributed to JCS for the spares levy in order to fund new tooling, equipment & stock in order to ensure the continued supply of parts for members vehicles
So why go making a song & dance over it - if you don't want to pay the JCS price then don't - equally don't advocate that you can save a few quid by going elsewhere publicly on the clubs forum - which in turn directly undermines the all the hard work that the volunteers at JCS undertake on our behalf - and believe me I personally witness the determined hard work that the JCS staff achieve on a regular basis
And just exactly where are you going to run when JCS is the sole stockholder / supplier of the part that you require in order to maintain your Jowett on the road ? - Straight back to JCS & the volunteers that you have undermined by any chance ?
I think that you may need to examine / review your ethos (along with several others that operate on the same basis)
