Radiators
From topic.
Have you ever had cooling problems on a Jowett? An aly rad certainly helps- giving 30% or more heat transfer, plus it is considerably lighter- putting less load on your engine. There is even an argument that says there is less corrosion with no copper in the cooling system.
Some of you may have been following Scott's post on the subject. Whilst at the NEC for the Classic car show I met with Alastair Bailey of Coolex heat transfer who came to the Jowett stand and gave a tentative quote on manufacture of alloy radiators. We have now sorted out various issues of design, options, transport insurance, customs duties, etc to offer them for worldwide delivery.
The radiators will be close to original except for a modern pressure cap fitting and improved fin design for much better cooling. They will have the extended curved header tank, two inlet, two outlet and heater pipe fittings and a male temperature sensor fitting. They are offered in the UK at £450 +VAT.
Shipping abroad would cost £90 but no VAT and, since the Free On Board cost (£540) will be less than AUS$1000 or US$800, there may be no duties to pay. You should confirm about the level of insurance required with Coolex on order and on the duty payable with your customs.
You can have them painted with black etch primer for £25 extra cost or have them without the fan guard for £30 less. Please confirm the options when you order from Coolex. Please email Alastair Bailey of Coolex, alastair@coolexperts.co.uk but please copy me so I know what is happening. We already have some orders, so more the merrier. It is Christmas!
Alloy Javelin radiators are also available. Check with Alastair regarding oil cooler brackets etc. These are around the £200 mark as an 'off the shelf' rather than custom core can be used.

Re: Radiators
The high capacity fan is a bit fatter so the rad needs to move closer to the front. This might involve opening up the holes holding the rubber mountings. There is still sufficient clearance for the fan although extra care is needed to ensure the fan has the same clearance throughout its travel. Further adjustment of the mounting holes might be needed to achieve this.
Once this was done I then removed the mechanical fan as this not only makes the engine quieter but also gives a few more BHP. Unfortunately my mod to the fan boss to allow the fan to be removed/replaced without removing the rad no longer works as the rad is closer to the fan. Now either the water pump or rad needs to be moved to do the job.
Note in the picture below I compared the two rads by having the mounting brackets at the same level. The one fitted in 1998 was made larger to give extra cooling for the Sahara desert rally. It had two problems. If the rad was set vertical, rather than being fitted to be in line with the fan, the bottom of the rad hit the gearbox selector knuckle. If set on the standard 1.5cm rubber mounts it hit the bonnet support tube at the top just above the water inlet. The rad did have about 20% more surface area so was thought necessary for the desert temperatures. We never got close to needing so much cooling!
I asked Coolex to make the rad to my dimensions rather than those of the original Jowett rad that I gave Coolex as a pattern. This overcomes both the issues although it could be about 3 cm taller, making the core size the same as the Saharan rad, as now there is a lot of clearance at the top of the bonnet with the bonnet gap parallel and even around the scuttle. This could not be acheived with the old rad. The front bonnet locating mounts were previously raised to stop the rad hitting the bonnet support tube.
The rad is half the weight of the original rad and beautifully made.
alastair@coolexperts.co.uk still has my rad as a pattern so can make Jupiter rads close to the original and also with electric fan (normal or high capacity) and thermostat fitted.
