What is /was it?

Whilst I was putting the Xmas decorations back in the loft, I found a box of Jowett oddments that included a chassis plate. (I think I got it at a car boot sale).

It is 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" and has very plain engraved lettering as follows: -

MADE BY ( with a big gap in between), with the words JOWETT CARS, LIMITED in a curve across, below and between the above words, and then IDLE and BRADFORD in two lines below that.

Then below that again it says: - CAR No.41803 and TYPE D.

What was a 'Type D'? When was this car built? Is this label of special interest to anyone?

Ian
1924 model year but not sure what the type D stands for. Is it a designation used for long chassis vehicles (assuming shorts were type C) and pre ww1 A & B or is the D for delux - but this is pure guesswork.

Hi Ian,

Perhaps the wider Jowetteering fraternity through the medium of the 'Jowetteer' could give a definitive answer if there's nothing in 'The Complete Jowett History'.

Regards,

Tony.

Sadly I do not have a copy of 'The Complete Jowett History' (even after the last Xmas!). Can anyone shed more light?

have now managed to have a look in the complete jowett history & my guess was right. The D was the long four.

"the 1922 motor show saw the introduction of the long four, or full four seater, designated type D".

complete jowet history page 30

George: -

Many thanks for the information. Bit of a coincidence that I also have a Long Four!

Does anyone have a better claim than me to ownership of the plate?

Negotiable transfer but no cash involved.
