LOSS OF REVERSE GEAR

Post by Mike Allfrey »

G'dday From Sunny South!

Have been trouble shooting Richard Homersham's Javelin to try and find out where reverse gear has gone to.

After most of an afternoon's fiddling around, it was discovered that the gear change link ball joint was fouling the starter motor casing, preventing the gear operating shaft from rotating far enough to fully engage reverse. The ball joint looks to be standard.

We will be setting up the linkage from scratch, exactly as described in the manual. I think getting the system right should give us a good start point. My thoughts are that the selector change link is set so that it pulls the gear operating shaft down too far. We shall see.

Another thought, though verging on the brink of the fine art of Bodgerism, is to install a pair of washers under the ball where it fits in the operating arm. This will have the effect of raising the ball joint housing to provide clearance at the starter motor.

Anyone experienced such a concern before?

Kind regards to all,

Mike Allfrey.

There may be different arms for the bottom of the steering column and side of the gearbox for RHD/LHD. Possibly incorrect position of arm on gearbox top. Check with known good one. Perhaps a picture taken vertically down when box in neutral might help.
If new shaft fitted then this may not have been machined correctly.
I had problems with reverse once caused by the position of the reversing switch.
